Fraport is planning a comprehensive expansion of the Frankfurt cargo hub

Fraport, operator of Frankfurt Airport, is planning a strategic realignment of its CargoHub to meet the expected growth in the air freight business. In view of the forecast global economic growth, air freight traffic is expected to continue to increase both worldwide and in Europe in the medium and long term. The Frankfurt CargoHub is expected to follow this market development, with air freight volumes expected to increase to over three million tons by 2040. Pierre Dominique Prümm, Executive Director Aviation and Infrastructure at Fraport AG, explained: "In view of the expected growth and changing requirements, now is the right time for a comprehensive innovation and investment package. Our goal is to position the Frankfurt CargoHub for the future and thus make a clear contribution to the growth of the state of Hesse as an economic powerhouse in Germany and Europe." The new master plan rests on three pillars: digitalization and process innovation, optimization of space and development of areas. The aim is to introduce comprehensively digitalized processes to further increase efficiency and enable uncomplicated, seamless and transparent logistics. Fraport also plans to redesign and develop existing areas within CargoCity South. This will create 43.000 square meters of additional cargo space with a direct connection to the apron. In addition, 20.000 square meters of additional space will be created for ground handling and special services. In parallel, Fraport plans to expand its logistics infrastructure with a new LogisticsHub West on the site of the former Ticona plant on the west flank of the airport. The development is being carried out in close cooperation with the cargo community in order to take into account the needs of all those involved and to make the CargoHub sustainable. The measures are being implemented by Dietmar

Air passenger rights portal fears many delays in May 2024

An analysis of 2023 flight data by travel tech company AirHelp shows that more than a third of passengers in Germany who traveled over the May holidays were affected by flight delays or cancellations. Problems were particularly common over Pentecost, with 36 percent of passengers being delayed or not taking off at all. The delay and cancellation rate was particularly high on Friday and Saturday. On Labor Day, however, comparatively few travelers had problems with their flights. The analysis also shows that most problems occurred on flights to Turkey, followed by Denmark and Switzerland. Flights to Ireland, Austria and Spain were less affected. Spain was the most popular destination overall over the May holidays, followed by Germany and Turkey. In total, more than 1,5 million passengers experienced flight problems over the bridge days. Around 90.000 passengers are entitled to compensation payments due to delays or flight cancellations. Nina Staub, legal expert at AirHelp, encourages affected travelers to file their claims, regardless of whether they are on short- or long-haul flights.

Innsbruck continues to fight to maintain the aviation weather service

The decision to operate the aviation weather service for the federal state airports centrally in Vienna-Schwechat in the future is meeting with resistance, especially at Innsbruck Airport. Austro Control, a federal company, plans to relocate the weather service from Innsbruck Airport in the middle of the year. This has led to concerns about safety, but previous initiatives to keep the weather service in Innsbruck have been rejected by Austro Control and the Climate Protection Ministry. Nevertheless, ÖVP National Councillor Hermann Gahr and Innsbrucker Kommunalbetriebe (IKB), the majority owner of the airport, are not giving up. They have consulted experts and turned to the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) in Cologne. There are doubts as to whether the centralization of the weather service in Vienna-Schwechat meets the legal requirements. The objectivity of the ministry in connection with the centralization is also questioned. There are fears that the federal government's budgetary interests could affect flight safety. The special meteorological conditions at Innsbruck Airport require precise knowledge of local conditions and experience, stress opponents of centralization. Hermann Gahr is urging Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler to change her mind. He argues that moving the weather service to Vienna-Schwechat would worsen the forecasts. The special features of Innsbruck Airport, such as its location in the mountains and the special approach and departure procedures, require precise weather forecasts for flight safety. Gahr stresses the importance of safety for air traffic and the city of Innsbruck. Without accurate weather forecasts, the airport would lose safety and acceptance, he is convinced. He is calling for modern technology and an experienced team of weather experts at Innsbruck Airport to prepare the forecasts and

Dortmund Airport: Girls visit the airport fire department

As part of the annual Girls' Day, the Dortmund Airport fire brigade invited eighteen interested girls to a taster day. The aim of this initiative is to promote diversity in the professional world and to break gender stereotypes by introducing schoolgirls to careers that have previously been represented primarily by the other sex. During the day, the fire brigade led the schoolgirls from grades six to nine through the airport, informed them about fire protection measures in the terminal and gave them the opportunity to view the apron and runway up close. The tour ended at the airport's own fire station, where the participants were able to view the impressive Panther category emergency vehicles. The event concluded with a fire-fighting exercise in which the group was able to get involved themselves and practice the proper use of fire extinguishers. With Girls' Day, companies want to draw attention in particular to professions in which the gender ratio is unbalanced and the proportion of women is less than 40 percent. Airport manager Ludger van Bebber supports this form of career guidance and stresses that rigid gender roles are long outdated. It is therefore very welcome that young schoolgirls visit the airport every year and consider careers that have previously been dominated by men. Girls' Day helps to promote more diversity and encourage young women.

ÖBB with more profits and passengers in 2023

The Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) performed well economically in the 2023 financial year despite an energy crisis, high inflation and a general economic downturn. A key reason for this was the positive development in passenger numbers: with almost 494 million passengers traveling by train or bus, the ÖBB recorded an increase of 10,5% compared to the previous year, setting a new record. Despite a decline in earnings before taxes (EBT) of 42,2% to EUR 111,6 million, which is due to a special effect in the previous year, the ÖBB Group was able to generate a solid increase overall. All ÖBB subgroups made a profit in 2023: ÖBB Personenverkehr closed with EUR 109,1 million, the ÖBB Rail Cargo Group with EUR 13 million and ÖBB Infrastruktur with EUR 7,7 million. While passenger transport recorded a record number of passengers, freight transport recorded a decline of 8,4% due to the recessionary industrial environment. Punctuality suffered from the increasing number of passengers, but was still at a respectable 95,0% in the overall system. CEO Andreas Matthä emphasized the role of passengers in this success and was pleased with the influx and popularity. CFO Manuela Waldner pointed out that despite difficult economic conditions, all subgroups achieved positive results. Freight transport in particular was burdened by the economic downturn and high electricity prices. To make the shift to rail more attractive, ÖBB is investing in intermodal offers. ÖBB passenger transport generated a 2023% increase in revenue to EUR 15 million in 3.136,3, but earnings before taxes fell

WKO and Vida agree on new AUA-KV

The salaries of all flight attendants and pilots at Austrian Airlines (AUA) are to be increased by a total of 2026 percent in three steps by January 20. In addition, the salary of co-pilots will be increased by an average of a further 11 percent. This agreement was reached between the Vida union and the AUA management. For the cabin crew, this means a significant salary increase above the inflation rate, explains Daniel Liebhart, head of the aviation department in the Vida union. Inflation over the entire term will be compensated accordingly. The union members are to vote on the result in the coming days, emphasizes Liebhart, and the result is binding for the union. In addition to the financial improvements, other benefits were also achieved for the employees, such as a reduction in the workload and improved protection against the loss of the pilot's license in the event of permanent unfitness to fly for medical reasons. The term of three years meets a requirement of the employer and guarantees planning security for the company, says Liebhart. This also ensures high-quality and reliable flight operations for passengers and enables them to book their flight tickets with Austrian Airlines without hesitation in the coming years.

WKÖ-Ofner welcomes KV agreement at AUA: relief for customers and employees

The agreement on a collective agreement for the cabin crew of Austrian Airlines (AUA) has been welcomed by the head of the Austrian Aviation Industry Association, Günther Ofner. This is a long-awaited signal for both customers and employees of AUA and offers the prospect of continued positive development of Austria as an aviation location. After the agreement reached with the employee representatives, the approval of the Vida union is now missing. This agreement is of great importance for travelers, Ofner emphasizes, as they can once again rely on the usual reliability when traveling to and from Vienna. This is also a positive impulse for the further development of Austria as an aviation location.
