Weak traffic development at German airports in the first quarter of 2024

The airport association ADV published its traffic figures for the first quarter of 2024 on Friday. According to the data, a total of 39,58 million passengers (arrivals and deparments) were handled at German airports from January to March, an increase of 13,2 percent compared to the same period last year. However, this growth is being held back by strikes, high regulatory site costs and a lack of air transport offers in Germany. Demand rose mainly due to the early Easter holidays, but this masks the overall weak traffic development. Germany is lagging behind other European countries with a recovery rate of 77,9 percent compared to 2019. ADV Managing Director Ralph Beisel explained that the high regulatory site costs are deterring many airlines and leading to new routes being opened outside Germany. This means that private and business travelers do not receive an adequate offer. In detail, the ADV statistics show that 5,08 million passengers flew within Germany (+7,7 percent year-on-year), but this was down by more than half compared to 2019. In European traffic, 25,48 million passengers were on the move (+14,4 percent year-on-year, but still 84,5 percent less than in the first quarter of 2019). Demand in intercontinental traffic grew by 13,5 percent year-on-year, but is still 7,7 percent below the 2019 level. Air freight volumes in the first quarter of 2024 reflect the weakness of the German export economy. While inbound air freight increased by +2,3 percent, exports fell by 2,1 percent. However, ADV expects passenger numbers to rise for the summer months. The transport experts forecast almost 2024 million passengers for April to September 118, which represents growth of 5,0

ÖBB: Positive passenger development in the 2023 financial year

Despite the energy crisis, high inflation and an economic downturn in 2023, the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) have performed well economically. This is mainly thanks to the positive passenger development: with almost 494 million people traveling by train or bus last year, the ÖBB recorded an increase of 10,5 percent compared to 2022, reaching a historic high. Overall, the ÖBB Group generated a solid increase in 2023, with earnings before taxes (EBT) amounting to 111,6 million euros. This corresponds to a decrease of 42,2 percent compared to 2022 (193,2 million euros), although this comparability is impaired by a special effect in 2022. ÖBB CEO Andreas Matthä commented: “We have succeeded in achieving a stable increase despite the economically challenging situation. This is thanks not least to our passengers. Never before have so many people travelled by train in Austria. I am very pleased about this influx and support."

Unnoticed for 80 years: 314 World War II bombs found in Athens-Ellinikon

Extensive construction work is currently taking place on the site of the former Athens-Ellinikon airport. During this work, 314 bombs that had been "stored" in the ground for at least 80 years were found and have now been defused by experts. It is not clear when the extremely dangerous relics from the Second World War came to the site. All that is certain is that they are bombs from the Second World War. So far, 314 have been found. According to a statement from the authorities, these were rendered harmless in an underground storage room. The responsible office cannot rule out the possibility that there may be other World War II bombs on the site of the former Athens-Ellinikon airport. The fact that the 314 explosive devices were apparently improperly "disposed of" during the construction of a terminal at the abandoned airport is worrying. However, there is also an alternative hypothesis: the Wehrmacht may have stored them for "later" during a hasty withdrawal in 1941. According to the statement of the mayor, Giannis Konstantatos, these were found "collected" in an underground storage room in the immediate vicinity of the former West Terminal, which was once the only departure hall and was recently only used for domestic flights. This is the terminal that was located near the sea and in the immediate vicinity, for example, former hangars were converted into sports facilities for the Olympic Games that took place in 2004. Terminal, schools, kindergartens and residential buildings in the immediate vicinity The West Terminal of the former Elliniko Airport was - in contrast to the East Terminal, which is in poor condition but is a listed building - already renovated several years ago.
