SSJ-100 and MS-21 are to be marketed as Yakovlev

The aircraft manufacturing group UAC (United Aircraft Corporation) is faced with the challenge of giving its new aircraft models a uniform umbrella name. Until now, the Superjet and the MS-21 were marketed under different brands: the Superjet as the Sukhoi Superjet and the MS-21 as the Irkut MS-21. However, with structural changes within the group, including the integration of the Superjet under Irkut, a new name became necessary. Now the parent company of UAC, Rostec, has decided on a common name, as Sergey Chemezov, the CEO of Rostec, announced to the newspaper RBC. The aircraft models Superjet 100 and MS-21 are to be brought together under the Yakovlev Design Bureau. Chemezov expressed his belief that the new umbrella name for the entire range of UAC civil aircraft will be "Yakovlev". This strategic decision marks a consolidation of the brand and is intended to strengthen the identity of the UAC aircraft. The merger under the Yakovlev Design Bureau could increase the visibility and recognition of the aircraft models and send a clear brand message.

Finnair resumes flights to Tartu

Finnair announced that it will resume flights to Tartu, Estonia, from 2 June 2024. The airline had suspended operations for a month to implement a solution to GPS interference at Tartu Airport. The previous approach procedures were based on GPS signals, which caused problems when these were interfered with. Finnair therefore decided to temporarily suspend flights between Helsinki and Tartu until alternative approach methods without a GPS signal could be introduced. The updated approach procedures at Tartu Airport now allow approaches using ground-based radio signals sent from ground stations. These traditional methods are immune to GPS interference and have been successfully introduced. Jari Paajanen, Vice President Operations Control at Finnair, praised the Estonian partners for their quick solution to the problem. Finnair plans to operate the flights to Tartu with ATR aircraft from Finnair's partner Norra, twice a day, six days a week. Although GPS interference has increased since 2022, Finnair has robust systems and alternative navigation technologies to ensure safe flight operations. Pilots are prepared for and able to respond to GPS interference.

More air freight at Vienna-Schwechat Airport

The air freight business at Vienna Airport is experiencing a significant upturn. In the first quarter of 2024, a total of 68.058 tons of air freight were handled for import and export, an increase of 16 percent compared to the previous year. In addition, this represents an increase of over 2 percent compared to the pre-Corona year of 2019. The increase in tonnage in the Pharma Handling Center by 6,9 percent to a total of 886 tons is particularly pleasing. These positive results are mainly due to the significant increases in belly freight in passenger aircraft. The renewed air traffic offers additional cargo space, which is in high demand. The volume of belly freight even more than doubled in the first quarter, more than compensating for the decline in pure cargo aircraft. Air freight replacement traffic also recorded an increase of 15 percent compared to the previous year. Both imported and exported air freight are showing balanced growth. Michael Zach, Head of Handling Services at Vienna Airport, is positive about these developments. Additional long-haul capacity to North America and Asia has already been added through the change in flight schedules. Vienna Airport has established itself as an important global cargo hub for Central and Eastern Europe. With its 24-hour operational availability and 10 Category F aircraft parking spaces, it offers ideal conditions for air cargo. The operating company Vienna Airport sees itself as well-equipped for further growth in order to strengthen and expand its role as an air cargo hub.

Dortmund introduces automated baggage check-in with Wizz Air

Since the beginning of May, passengers travelling with Wizz Air at Dortmund Airport have been able to check in their checked baggage quickly and easily themselves. The airport has implemented two automated self bag drop counters to reduce waiting times and optimise the travel experience. This modern service allows passengers to either drop off their baggage with the check-in staff or use the new automated process. The counters are simple and intuitive to use: after scanning the boarding pass, there are seven languages to choose from to guide the process. The baggage is automatically measured, weighed and checked for the airline's baggage regulations before the baggage label is printed out. The passenger attaches the label visibly to the baggage and receives a baggage slip as a receipt. Please note that the service can only be used by passengers who already have a valid boarding pass. Travellers without checked baggage or with excess baggage must report to the regular check-in counter. For the time being, the service is only available for travel with Wizz Air and the opening hours of the machines are tied to the airline's regular baggage drop-off times.
