Evaluation: Flight ticket prices continued to rise

Travelers flying on summer vacations must expect higher ticket prices on many routes this year. A recent analysis by the comparison portal "Check24" confirms the trend that some airlines had already announced. According to the analysis, prices for flights from German airports to the 30 most popular travel destinations rose by an average of eight percent by mid-May. Prices for flights to the British Isles rose particularly sharply. A return flight to Edinburgh costs an average of 327 euros, which corresponds to an increase of 26 percent compared to the previous year. Flights to Dublin (plus 22 percent) and London (plus 20 percent) have also become significantly more expensive. Flights to Mallorca have seen a price increase of 14 percent, now costing an average of 296 euros instead of 260 euros. A few destinations, however, have seen falling prices. For example, the cost of flights to Athens has fallen by 14 percent compared to last year. A return flight costs an average of 303 euros this summer, compared to 351 euros last year. There are many reasons for the increased prices. The comparison portal cites increased demand, general inflation and increased operating costs for airlines as the main factors. The recently increased ticket tax also contributes to the higher prices. Holidaymakers can still save money if they are flexible with their travel dates and departure airports. Flights can be cheaper if they depart from airports in federal states that do not have summer holidays. According to "Check24", departure from airports in neighboring countries can also be attractively priced.

Ryanair is staying the course: optimistic about the future despite delays

Ryanair Holdings remains optimistic about the introduction of the new Boeing 737-8 into its fleet, despite delivery delays for the Boeing 200-737-10. This confidence is clearly reflected in the company's recent announcements and continued plans to expand its capacity. During a conference call, Ryanair's Chief Financial Officer Neil Sorahan provided insight into the airline's future plans. He confirmed that Ryanair fully expects to receive the first Boeing 737-10 in the first half of 2027. This confidence is based on the expectation that certification of the Boeing 737-7 will take place towards the end of 2024 or the beginning of 2025, followed by certification of the 737-10 in the first half of 2025. Ryanair has a total of 150 Boeing 737-10s on firm order and has options for a further 150, making the Irish airline the world's second largest customer for this aircraft type after United Airlines. Despite the delays in certification and delivery, Ryanair remains committed to its plan and is ready to take over the delivery slots of other operators should further cancellations occur. However, the delays in the production of the Boeing 737-8-200 have forced Ryanair to adjust its capacity plans for 2024. Currently, the airline operates 150 of these aircraft, distributed among its various subsidiaries such as Ryanair, Buzz in Poland and Malta Air. Originally, Ryanair planned to have a total of 2024 aircraft of this type in its fleet by the end of July 181, but had to reduce this target to 158 aircraft. These adjustments have an impact on the airline's capacity planning and growth in the short term. Nevertheless, Ryanair remains optimistic that it will overcome these challenges and continue to

Last Friday, the German charter airline Avanti Air, in cooperation with Springer Reisen, took off for the first time on a flight from Linz to the Greek island of Skiathos. The premiere was greeted with great anticipation and good humor by passengers at Linz Airport. This new flight connection, which will be offered weekly until September 27, 2024, opens up new opportunities for vacationers to discover the lesser-known beauties of Greece. Springer Reisen, a tour operator based in Carinthia, is expanding its offering to include this exclusive connection. The flight will be operated with a Dash 8-400, which can accommodate 76 passengers. Avantiair is a proven partner known for its reliability. Skiathos and the surrounding islands of Skopelos, Alonissos and the Pelion peninsula offer numerous attractive vacation destinations. Wizz Air is back in the black

Wizz Air, which recently celebrated its 20th anniversary, achieved an impressive turnaround in the last financial year. After making losses for three years in a row, the company has now returned to profitability. This positive development is mainly due to robust demand for air travel, which was not significantly affected by geopolitical tensions and temporary fleet outages due to engine inspections. For the current financial year, Wizz Air expects an even higher net profit of between EUR 500 and 600 million. The airline expects demand for air travel to remain strong, which should lead to higher earnings. This is particularly notable given the ongoing geopolitical uncertainties and the associated challenges such as inflationary pressures and rising operating costs. CEO Jozsef Varadi stressed that despite strained supply chains and rising costs, the airline will continue to grow through strict cost controls and a strong summer season. This optimistic forecast is supported by the fact that Wizz Air carried 62 million passengers last year, which underlines the robust demand for its services. Compared to other European low-cost carriers such as Ryanair and Easyjet, Wizz Air is currently in a strong position. Ryanair, Europe's largest airline by passenger numbers, also reported an annual profit above analysts' expectations. Easyjet, on the other hand, reported losses in the first half of the year, which highlights the different dynamics within the industry. Varadi pointed out that the challenges in the coming year will be mainly characterized by ongoing geopolitical instability, which will bring inflationary pressures and rising operating costs. Despite these challenges, Wizz Air remains

GdF and DFS reach a collective agreement

After more than 70 days of negotiations, the German Air Traffic Control (DFS) and the Air Traffic Control Union (GdF) have reached a far-reaching collective agreement that was reached without strikes or industrial action. A key point of the agreement is the conversion of the company pension scheme for newly hired air traffic controllers and other employees to a capital market-financed system. This is intended to relieve the DFS of interest rate risks and reduce fluctuations in balance sheet provisions. In addition, the DFS is planning savings by introducing a new entry level for new air traffic controllers, which should lead to a reduction in costs against the background of numerous retirements from the baby boomer generation. A new maximum level has been introduced at the upper end of the salary scale to ensure the attractiveness of the profession in the long term. The part-time arrangements will also be more closely aligned with operational needs. A total of 18 collective agreements have been amended, which also include the salary increases already agreed in 2022. These provide for a pay increase of around 20 percent over a period of more than four years until March 2027. DFS CEO Arndt Schoenemann described the wage increases as "reasonable and responsible".

Passenger volumes at German airports increased in April 2024

In April 2024, German airports recorded a significant increase in passenger volume, welcoming a total of 17,4 million arriving and departing passengers. This figure represents an increase of around 2,3 million passengers compared to the previous month of March. The increase is largely due to the Easter holidays, which triggered an increased desire to travel in many federal states. Despite this positive development, however, Germany is lagging behind in European comparison: the recovery rate in April 2024 only reached 82,1 percent of the pre-crisis level of 2019, while other European countries are already recording significantly higher values. Domestic passenger volume in Germany rose to 2,07 million in April, which corresponds to an increase of almost 209.000 passengers compared to March. This represents an increase of 13 percent year-on-year, but the number of passengers remains 47,3 percent below April 2019. European air traffic, which accounts for 70 percent of total traffic, recorded 11,93 million passengers, up 20,2 percent from March and 7,9 percent from the previous year. Intercontinental flights grew by 10,6 percent compared to April 2023, reaching 3,37 million passengers. Cargo also showed growth: a total of 393.548 tons were handled in April, an increase of 4,7 percent from the previous year. Compared to 2019, cargo volumes remained almost unchanged. From January to April 2024, a total of 56,99 million passengers were counted at German airports, an increase of 11,9 percent compared to the same period last year. However, despite seasonal growth and the beginning of the summer flight schedule period, the recovery rate is minimal, at 79,1 percent.

Farewell to Alouette III: A chapter in Austrian military history ends

On Friday, May 24, 2024, an important ceremony took place in Aigen im Ennstal: Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner and the Governor of Styria, Christopher Drexler, ceremoniously bid farewell to the long-serving Alouette III multi-purpose helicopter from the Austrian Armed Forces fleet. The Alouette III, in service since 1967, shaped military "mountain aviation" for decades and was indispensable in numerous rescue and disaster operations. In her speech, Defense Minister Tanner emphasized the outstanding performance of the Alouette III and thanked everyone involved: "An era ends, a new one begins! Powerful, reliable and versatile - these are characteristics that have been associated with our Alouette III in recent decades." The newly acquired Leonardo AW169 multi-purpose helicopter will now usher in a promising era in military aviation. Governor Drexler also acknowledged the importance of the Alouette III for Styria and was pleased about the future investments: "The new helicopter will create around 200 additional jobs for the shipyard and a total of 40 million will be invested in the infrastructure and thus in our Styria." The Alouette III was put into service in 1967 by the French manufacturer Sud Aviation/Aérospatiale. With 570 hp, a range of 400 km and a speed of 210 km/h, the helicopter has proven itself in many missions at home and abroad. The last operational flight took place at the end of 2023. The Alouette III will now be completely replaced by the Leonardo AW169, which will also result in an upgrade of the Aigen im Ennstal base.
