Lufthansa expands reactivated A380 fleet: new operations planned from Munich

Lufthansa has added another aircraft to its reactivated A380 fleet, the D-AIMH. After a general technical overhaul in Manila, the aircraft was initially transferred to Frankfurt on June 6, 2024. It will soon begin service at the Munich hub. The company carried out the so-called D-Check in Manila, a major inspection that was due on the D-AIMH after twelve years. The sixth A380 will soon join the sub-fleet in Munich. Lufthansa plans to operate A2024 flights from Munich to New York, Washington, Boston, Los Angeles and Delhi from July 380. A seventh A380, the D-AIMB, was also taken from storage in Teruel and flown to Frankfurt. It will also be overhauled in Manila before returning to the active fleet. In total, Lufthansa plans to use eight A380s in Munich, while six more have been sold to Airbus. These will be part-out, i.e. they will be dismantled by Airbus to serve as spare parts. The airline plans to use the remaining aircraft for a few more years. From 2025, Lufthansa will start a retrofit program in which the A380s will receive a new business class with "Vantage XL" seats from the manufacturer Thompson Aero.

Restricted flight zones set up over European Championship stadiums: drone flights banned

During the European Football Championship in Germany, restricted flight zones will be set up over the stadiums at the venues. This was announced by the German air traffic control. The ban also includes flying drones, with the only exceptions being police and rescue services. The measure is intended to ensure the safety of players, spectators and the general public. Violations of the drone ban can have legal consequences and be considered a dangerous interference with air traffic. According to the Criminal Code, this can result in prison sentences of up to ten years. In addition to the drone bans, depending on the security situation, further flight restrictions for manned aviation can also be activated. These are made dependent on the police assessment of the risk situation of a game. The European Football Championship will take place in Germany from June 14 to July 14, 2024. Temporary controls have been possible at all German borders since this Friday. According to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, these controls are intended to detect and ward off potential threats such as Islamist terror, hooliganism and cyber attacks at an early stage. Airbus reports decline in aircraft deliveries in May 2024

In May 2024, Airbus delivered 53 aircraft, a 16 percent year-on-year decrease. A total of 256 aircraft have been delivered to customers since the beginning of the year. The aircraft manufacturer announced this on Thursday. Demand for aircraft is high, while supply is tight, especially at Boeing. Analysts such as Chloe Lemarie of Jefferies described the figure of 53 deliveries as a "setback". Airbus had actually aimed for around 60 deliveries. The company now has to make up a "significant backlog" to meet its quarterly targets, said Lemarie. The annual target of 800 deliveries is under threat as Airbus is under pressure due to shortages of parts and labor. Analysts such as Victor Allard of Goldman Sachs and Christophe Menard of Deutsche Bank emphasize the importance of the coming months for Airbus' production and delivery plans. Despite the challenges, Airbus' order book remains well filled. In May, the company recorded orders for 27 new aircraft and sold 27 aircraft, including 20 A330 Neos to an unnamed customer. Airbus has sold 254 aircraft so far this year. On the stock market, Airbus shares reacted negatively to the news, losing two and a half percent to 149,68 euros by early afternoon. Nevertheless, the stock has still gained almost seven percent since the beginning of the year.

Report on ILA: Up to 68% flights in EU possible with new aircraft configurations by 2050

At the International Aerospace Exhibition (ILA), AZEA presented a report outlining an ambitious goal by 2050: between 36 and 68% of flights within the EU could be operated with new aircraft configurations. The report predicts that up to 23.000 electric and hydrogen-powered aircraft could be delivered to European operators by 2050, which could reduce emissions from intra-European air transport by up to 31%. Operating these aircraft in 2050 would require between 78 and 198 terawatt hours of electricity and 1,2 to 2,9 million tonnes of hydrogen per year. Easyjet welcomes the report's findings, as it is already heavily committed to the future use of hydrogen in short-haul air travel to reduce CO2 emissions. Easyjet has already published its "Net Zero" roadmap in 2022, which sets out a variety of measures to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, including fleet renewal and collaborations with industry leaders such as Airbus and Rolls-Royce. Johan Lundgren, CEO of Easyjet, stressed the importance of zero-emission technologies for the decarbonization of European aviation and called for joint efforts by industry, governments and regulators to realize this vision. He emphasized the opportunity to make European air transport greener while opening up new markets and opportunities for future generations.

Progress on the new gate at Munich Airport

The new pier at Terminal 1 of Munich Airport is making great progress. After the external facade was closed last year, the interior work is currently progressing rapidly. Completion is planned for the end of 2025, followed by extensive test operations before commissioning. "With the expansion, we are ensuring that a high quality of stay and service will be offered in all handling areas in the future," explains Jost Lammers, Chairman of the Management Board of Munich Airport GmbH (FMG). The new pier extends into the west apron with a length of around 360 meters and covers around 95.000 square meters. FMG is investing a total of 665 million euros in the project. The building has six floors, three of which are intended for passengers and handling. The pier can accommodate up to twelve smaller aircraft or six wide-body aircraft at the same time. The central security control area is equipped with the latest CT technology. The equipment in the new building is based on energy-efficient systems technology, including air treatment systems with highly efficient heat recovery systems. Nathalie Leroy, FMG Managing Director for Finance and Infrastructure, emphasises that the improvements will make Terminal 1 state-of-the-art and ideally equipped for future challenges. The extended pier will also offer commercial areas with retreats, children's playgrounds and exhibition areas. The "Bavarian Soul" concept will present the airport as Bavaria's calling card. A central marketplace with a duty-free area and numerous catering and retail units will be the heart of the new pier.
