KLM struggles with engine checks and challenges in intercontinental traffic
The Dutch airline KLM continues to face outages in its E2 fleet caused by engine checks. Despite these challenges, KLM reports a return to pre-crisis levels in European traffic. Long-haul traffic, on the other hand, remains a work in progress, as airline boss Marjan Rintel explained in an interview. According to Rintel, KLM has currently regained a total of 88 percent of the capacity of the pre-crisis year of 2019. European traffic is already back at around 100 percent, while the recovery on long-haul routes is slower. The problems in intercontinental traffic are mainly due to the detours that are necessary due to the flight restrictions over Russian airspace. According to Rintel, these detours require around 30 percent more fleet and personnel capacity compared to direct routes. Rintel stressed that despite the progress in European traffic, the challenges on long-haul routes remain. Capacities and resources remain under severe strain, delaying the full return to pre-crisis levels.
