Dortmund records moderate growth in the first half of 2024

Dortmund Airport is closing the first half of 2024 with moderate growth, enabling it to further build on the strong level of the record year 2023. Emirates SkyCargo expands fleet with five new Boeing 777 freighters

Emirates SkyCargo has placed a new order for five Boeing 777 freighters to be delivered between 2025 and 2026. This order, valued at US$1 billion, brings the airline's fleet to a total of 315 wide-body aircraft and is expected to increase main deck capacity by 30%, enabling it to more efficiently serve growing demand in key markets. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group, highlighted the strategic importance of the new investment: “Demand for our products is growing exponentially, supported by Dubai's economic agenda. This expansion of our fleet is another step to meet this demand and strengthen our position as a global trade center.” Stephanie Pope, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, was pleased with Emirates SkyCargo's renewed choice of the Boeing 777: “We appreciate Emirates' confidence in Boeing's wide-body aircraft and are committed to supporting their long-term growth plan.” Emirates SkyCargo will replace older freighters with the phased delivery of the new Boeing 777F and also plans to convert 10 Boeing 777-300ERs into freighters by the end of 2025. At the start of the summer holidays in Baden-Württemberg, Stuttgart Airport is preparing for a rush. The busiest day is expected on Monday, July 29, 2024 in particular, with 260 flight movements. Towards sustainable aviation: Europe’s SAF challenges

The aviation industry is facing one of its greatest challenges: the transition to sustainable fuels. In view of the pressing climate change and the increasing environmental impact of air traffic, the European Union has set ambitious goals. From 2025, airlines must gradually integrate Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), i.e. CO2-neutral fuels, into their fleets. This measure is part of the EU project "ReFuelEU Aviation", which aims to significantly reduce CO2 emissions from aviation and make the industry more sustainable in the long term. However, the introduction of SAF is associated with considerable difficulties. European airlines are facing an acute shortage in the availability of these fuels. SAF is currently up to five times more expensive than conventional kerosene, which affects the competitiveness of airlines. Günther Ofner, chairman of the aviation professional group in the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (WKÖ), underlined the urgent need for targeted support and an adjustment of EU regulations to accelerate the production and use of SAF at an industry press conference. Challenges and demands of the aviation industry The aviation industry is faced with several challenges that stand in the way of the rapid introduction of SAF. Firstly, the high price difference between SAF and conventional kerosene is a decisive obstacle. In order to overcome this bottleneck, the industry association is calling for the taxes on airline tickets and the proceeds from emissions trading to be earmarked.
