Crisis at Deutsche Bahn: price increases, job cuts and dilapidated infrastructure

Deutsche Bahn (DB) is in a deep crisis that has worsened in recent weeks. Customers have to prepare for higher ticket prices, while thousands of employees fear for their jobs. In addition, the timetable chaos that has existed for years is becoming increasingly serious due to the dilapidated infrastructure and the numerous construction sites. These developments cast a gloomy light on the future of German rail transport, which is increasingly at risk of falling by the wayside in the face of these challenges. One of the key developments concerns the impending price increases for train tickets, which are a direct result of the federal government's financial decisions. As part of the 2025 budget, the government has decided not to pay any additional subsidies to Deutsche Bahn, but instead to increase equity by 4,5 billion euros for the network subsidiary DB Infrago. Due to legal requirements, this decision means that track access fees - i.e. the fees incurred for using the rail network - will increase by a fifth. For passengers, this means that the prices of train tickets will rise significantly from 2025. DB Fernverkehr had already announced in advance that if the track access charges were increased above the rate of inflation, ticket prices would also rise. Customers must therefore prepare for rail travel in Germany to become even more expensive - a further setback for efforts to make local and long-distance public transport more attractive and to achieve climate targets. Massive job cuts: administrative staff must go In addition to the rising costs, Deutsche Bahn is forced to make massive job cuts due to the enormous financial burden.

Paderborn/Lippstadt Airport achieves record figure in summer holidays 2024

Paderborn/Lippstadt Airport has set a new passenger record during the 2024 North Rhine-Westphalia summer holidays. With 164.248 passengers, the airport recorded an increase of 8% compared to the previous year, when 151.854 passengers were counted. This success exceeded the airport's forecasts, which assumed more than 150.000 passengers. The main reason for the increase was the high booking situation for holiday flights to popular destinations in southern Europe. A total of 1.156 larger aircraft took off and landed at Paderborn Airport during the six-week holiday period. Airport Managing Director Roland Hüser emphasized that operations ran smoothly, which was due to the good preparation and commitment of the employees. The increasing use of the Munich hub also made a significant contribution to the positive result. More and more passengers are using this connection to reach destinations in Europe, North America and Asia. Paderborn/Lippstadt Airport benefits from its good accessibility and often shorter travel times compared to larger airports.

Discover Airlines: Unions prepare strike

The joy of many travelers' vacations could soon be spoiled: At Discover Airlines, Lufthansa's vacation airline, the signs are pointing to a strike. After the members of the unions Ufo and Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) voted overwhelmingly in favor of industrial action in separate ballots, there could soon be significant disruptions to flight operations. Although a specific strike date has not yet been announced, the unions are preparing to call the workforce on strike if necessary. This could significantly affect the travel plans of thousands of passengers during the holiday season. Conflict over collective agreements: Unions want to enforce their own agreements The main point of contention between the unions and Discover Airlines lies in the collective agreements. Vereinigung Cockpit, which represents the interests of pilots, and Ufo, the union for flight attendants, want to enforce their own collective agreements and replace the existing agreements of the rival union Verdi. Verdi had already concluded collective agreements with the company in the past, but these have been rejected by Ufo and VC. These two trade unions see this as an attempt by the employer to select bargaining partners that are acceptable to them and thus weaken the interests of the workforce. Marcel Gröls, bargaining expert at the Cockpit Association, stresses the importance of employee rights in this conflict: "The Basic Law gives employees of a company the right to decide for themselves who they want to be represented by. The members of the Cockpit Association have decided by a clear majority that they will not accept the employers concluding collective agreements with a union that is acceptable to them over their heads." High approval for strikes: unions mobilize their members The clear
