First test flight with synthetic fuel from Deutsche Aircraft successful

The German aircraft manufacturer Deutsche Aircraft reached a significant milestone in aviation technology on October 9, 2024. For the first time, a test flight was successfully carried out with 100 percent synthetic, aromatic-free fuel. Both engines of the DLR D328 UpLift Flying Testbed aircraft were equipped with this innovative fuel. This flight marks the premiere for the exclusive operation of a CS-25 aircraft with a fuel that is chemically identical to power-to-liquid (PtL) fuels. The test flight took place as part of the CLIM0ART measurement campaign, which aims to measure in-flight emissions and assess the potential of 100 percent aromatic-free PtL for reducing the climate impact of air transport. This type of fuel can be produced using sustainable CO2, renewable energy and water and has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 95 percent. The measurement campaign is funded by the aviation research program (LuFo-Klima) of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection and is carried out in cooperation with the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the fuel manufacturer Sasol. During the campaign, the D328® UpLift platform will fly in formation with the DLR research aircraft Falcon 20E, which is equipped with special probes for measuring emissions. The results of the campaign are intended not only to contribute to the development of sustainable fuels, but also to improve air quality at airports.

SriLankan Airlines: Pilot locks co-pilot out of cockpit – investigation launched

An unusual and worrying incident is currently shaking the aviation industry. On September 21, 2024, a serious misunderstanding occurred between pilots on a SriLankan Airlines flight, significantly disrupting the regular operation of a long-haul flight. Flight UL 607, en route from Sydney to Colombo, got into an awkward situation towards the end of the flight when the captain refused to let his co-pilot back into the cockpit. This incident has alarmed not only the airline concerned, but also the international aviation community and is now leading to extensive investigations. The incident in detail The incident occurred on an Airbus A330 that was on an approximately 11-hour flight from Kingsford Smith Airport in Sydney to Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo. The co-pilot left the cockpit shortly before the end of the flight to use the toilet. This reportedly angered the captain, as she had not invited any other crew member into the cockpit to assist the captain during her absence, contrary to standard safety regulations. According to international safety standards, particularly the stricter regulations since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, a cockpit must never be left unoccupied during a flight. When the co-pilot returned and found that the cockpit was locked, she knocked on the door several times. But the captain reportedly refused to let her back in. Such a serious decision by the captain is extremely unusual and could be considered a serious breach of standard operating procedures. The cabin crew tried to defuse the situation and only after her intervention, via the aircraft's internal communication system, did they

Frontier Airlines: Pilots overwhelmingly vote for strike

Frontier Airlines pilots have clearly expressed their determination to go on strike to negotiate better working conditions and contracts. The vote of the US airline's approximately 2.000 pilots, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA), shows a clear stance: 99% of pilots eligible to vote voted in favor of using a strike as a means of pressure if the wage dispute remains unresolved. This step could have far-reaching effects on US air traffic and is an important signal to the management of Frontier Airlines. Background to the wage dispute Negotiations for a new collective agreement for Frontier pilots have been ongoing since January 2024. As is common in the aviation industry, such negotiations are governed by the Railway Labor Act (RLA), a special law that regulates industrial action in strategically important industries such as aviation. Since talks began in January, there have been several attempts at mediation. Despite these efforts, no agreement has yet been reached that meets the pilots' demands. Essentially, the pilots are demanding a market-based contract that brings their working conditions into line with industry standards. In a press release, ALPA stresses that the Frontier pilots want a contract that reflects their contributions to the airline's success. They feel disadvantaged compared to pilots at other major US airlines such as Delta Air Lines or Southwest Airlines, who have been able to significantly improve their salaries and working conditions in recent years. Unity and determination of the pilots The clear result of the vote, in which 99% of the pilots voted in favour of the strike authorization, illustrates the strong unity among the workforce members. Captain Michael Maynard, Chairman of the
