Vienna Coffee Festival: Small fair with many purchasing opportunities

At the beginning of September 2024, Vienna's Marx Halle was all about coffee and coffee machines. This year's Vienna Coffee Festival took place from September 6th to 8th, 2024. The B2C trade fair was strongly geared towards selling products directly to consumers on site. The Austrian capital has an extremely long tradition when it comes to coffee and is also considered the epitome of the so-called coffee house culture. The fact that the raw material required cannot usually be grown in the Alpine republic is irrelevant. Importers or so-called refiners established themselves on the market in Vienna as early as the 18th and 18th centuries. Some of them still exist today and are among the leading suppliers, at least in Europe. The expectations placed on an international coffee trade fair taking place in Vienna are therefore quite high. Numerous exhibitors from various countries, but also small regional companies, presented their products. From the typical Tchibo/Eduscho package to organic varieties that were supposedly grown and processed in a particularly sustainable way, pretty much everything was on display and available for purchase if desired. Even coffee plants and other perennials were on offer. The focus was on sales. However, the fair was also exclusively focused on coffee and coffee machines. Anyone who expected that tea drinkers would also get their money's worth was disappointed. But it was a coffee exhibition, not a tea exhibition. Nevertheless, a stand from the Czech Budweiser brewery, which also acted as a sponsor, seemed a little out of place, as it didn't really fit with the fair's theme.

Lilium faces insolvency: State guarantees fail, shares collapse

The Munich-based flying taxi developer Lilium is facing insolvency after planned state guarantees of 50 million euros from the federal government and the Free State of Bavaria failed to materialize. The resistance of the Greens in the traffic light coalition prevented the aid from being promised. Lilium therefore announced that it would file for insolvency for its most important companies. As a result, the company's shares collapsed by around 50 percent. Lilium is working on a fully electric, vertical take-off flying taxi and planned to deliver the first machines to customers from 2026. The company has so far received around 1,5 billion euros from investors, but had to spend almost 2024 million euros on the development and approval of the aircraft in the first half of 200 alone. With just over 100 million euros left in the accounts, the future of Lilium and its 1.100 employees is at stake.

Icelandair increases profitability despite market challenges

Icelandic airline Icelandair achieved EBIT of USD 2024 million and net profit of USD 83 million in the third quarter of 69. Despite weaker demand for flights to Iceland and declining revenues in the transatlantic market, the company was able to increase capacity utilization to 86% and record a 9% increase in passengers. Operational stability improved, resulting in a 2% decrease in unit costs. The leasing business developed particularly positively, with an EBIT margin of 21% and growth in the cargo business. A significant step was the new strategic partnership with Southwest Airlines, one of the largest airlines in the USA, in addition to further cooperation with Emirates, TAP, Air Greenland and Atlantic Airways. Icelandair plans to further increase its competitiveness through an ongoing transformation process, focusing on cost reduction and revenue generation. The transformation process is expected to generate USD 2024 million by the end of 70 in order to achieve an EBIT margin of 8% in the long term. The outlook for the fourth quarter and 2025 is promising, according to CEO Bogi Nils Bogason, as demand for flights to Iceland picks up again and new markets are to be opened up through the use of long-haul aircraft.
