Hertz offers special discount for train travelers during line closures in Austria

In response to the current line closures and delays in rail traffic in Austria, the car rental company Hertz has launched a "rail replacement service" offer. Venice increases entrance fee for day tourists in 2025 and extends regulation days

Venice will charge the entrance fee for day tourists on significantly more days in 2025, announced City Councilor for Finance Michele Zuin. The number of days on which the fee will be charged will increase from 29 to 54, including the Easter holidays and the period from mid-April to the end of July on weekends and public holidays. The city is thus responding to the high number of day visitors. The fee is five euros for early bookings, but increases to ten euros for short-term bookings. The QR code for access control can be downloaded online, otherwise there is a risk of fines of up to 300 euros. The measure, which was tested in a test phase in 2024, brought the city revenue of 2,4 million euros from 485.000 visitors. Mayor Luigi Brugnaro stresses the need for the measure to control mass tourism and relieve the pressure on the historic city center.

Bigchefs: Delicious food on the Shymbulak in front of Almaty

To reach the "Bigchefs" restaurant, you must have an electric vehicle, because for environmental reasons the access road has not been accessible to combustion engines for some time. If you can't do that, there is a gondola lift built by the Austrian company Doppelmayr. The journey time with this cable car is around 15 minutes. Tickets are available online via the official homepage of the Shymbulak Mountain Resort (the QR code on the mobile phone must be scanned at the turnstile) or simply on site at the cash desk. The "Bigchefs" is not a "classic ski hut that you could put on any mountain". It is located after the first section on the left hand side of the mountain station and immediately catches the eye with its architecture, which is characterized by a lot of wood. In two further sections, the cable cars take you up to 3.200 meters all year round. This is something you should consider before or after visiting the restaurant, unless you are here in winter to ski anyway, because the view of the mountains of Kazakhstan is impressive. If the visibility is good, you can even see a 5.000-meter mountain. There is no cable car on this mountain yet, and there are no plans for one, but who knows, Doppelmayr and Leitner would certainly like to make an offer... A portrait of the Shymbulak can be found under this link at Aviation.Direct. Turkish franchise chain on Almaty's local mountain "Bigchefs" is a franchise chain that is completely unknown in Western Europe and has its roots in Turkey. It is represented in Kazakhstan, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Northern Cyprus, Libya, Iraq,

Air Baltic wants to survive the winter without wet lease

Latvian airline Air Baltic has announced that it will cease its ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance) operations from 27 October 2024. This short-term wet-lease solution was introduced to meet increased demand during the summer months and to address aircraft engine maintenance challenges. In the upcoming winter season, Air Baltic will return to operating exclusively its own fleet of Airbus A220-300s to ensure a consistent flight experience. According to CEO Martin Gauss, the airline's adaptability last summer was crucial in maintaining all scheduled flights. Air Baltic plans to continue expanding its fleet and will soon take delivery of its 49th Airbus A220-300. In the long term, the company aims to grow to up to 2030 aircraft by 100 and consolidate its position as a leading airline in the region.

American Airlines appears more optimistic after profit warnings

After two profit warnings this year, the airline American Airlines has issued an optimistic forecast for the full year. Earnings per share adjusted for special items are expected to be between $1,35 and $1,60, the company announced on Thursday in Fort Worth, Texas. This is an increase on the previous estimate by airline CEO Robert Isom, who had forecast a maximum of $1,30. Despite revenue of over $13,6 billion in the third quarter, an increase of more than one percent compared to the previous year, American Airlines posted a loss of $149 million. Although the loss was lower than the $545 million in the same period last year, it was burdened by special costs from collective bargaining with pilots and flight attendants. These special items meant that profits would have fallen by 22 percent to $205 million without them. The increase in the annual forecast indicates that American Airlines plans to regain lost market share and win more business customers. To this end, new contracts were negotiated with large travel agencies and corporate customers in order to strengthen customer loyalty in this important segment.

Air Serbia expands fleet with Embraer E195 in its own operation

Air Serbia, the national airline of Serbia, successfully put the first Embraer E195 aircraft it operates into scheduled service on October 23, 2024, signaling the desired expansion and flexibility of its fleet. The 16-year-old, leased aircraft with the registration YU-ATB completed its maiden flights between Belgrade and the Montenegrin cities of Tivat and Podgorica on that day. With this new addition, a 118-seat jet, Air Serbia is beginning a gradual introduction of Embraer aircraft, which are expected to supplement the fleet in larger numbers in the medium term. However, the road to putting the E195 into service was not without hurdles. The introduction of this aircraft type was originally planned for June 2024, but was delayed by regulatory and administrative delays. The jet had already been in storage for over a year before it could enter active service after the necessary adjustments and approval by the aviation authorities. The Embraer E195, a regional jet divided into both business and economy class cabins, will be used on short and medium-haul routes to increase the flexibility of the fleet and better respond to market demand. CEO Jiri Marek told EX-YU Aviation News that Air Serbia expects strong demand in the smaller jet segment and plans to have a fleet plan that includes up to 15 Embraer jets in the medium term. This figure comes from comprehensive market analyses that indicate the need for a more flexible fleet. Particularly suited to routes with lower passenger volumes, the Embraer E195 ideally complements the fleet's existing Airbus and ATR aircraft. However, according to Marek, the expansion to these

Lufthansa plans to acquire stake in Air Baltic

The Lufthansa Group intends to acquire a 10% stake in the Latvian airline Air Baltic. This is reported by the Italian daily Corriere della Sera, citing anonymous sources. The stake is part of a broader consolidation movement in the European aviation industry. Air Baltic operates a fleet of Airbus A220 aircraft and specializes primarily in short and medium-haul flights. The Latvian airline acts as a de facto flag carrier for the Baltic states from its headquarters in Riga. While Air Baltic has not been considered a strategically important market for Lufthansa in the past, the planned stake could represent a new direction in Lufthansa's European expansion strategy. The Lufthansa Group is currently supplemented by numerous subsidiaries such as Austrian Airlines and SWISS and is in the final stages of taking over the Italian airline ITA Airways. The intended stake in Air Baltic would expand the existing wet lease agreements between the two companies and support service in Lufthansa's European hubs, including Frankfurt and Vienna. In recent months, Lufthansa has already shown interest in other European airlines, including TAP Air Portugal and Air Europa. However, the plans to invest in Air Baltic have not yet been officially confirmed. When asked about the speculation, both Air Baltic and Lufthansa refused to comment.
