Storms in Catalonia: The consequences of heavy rainfall

Following the devastating storms that hit the Valencia region in eastern Spain a few days ago, the neighboring region of Catalonia is now also affected by heavy rainfall. The effects are already clearly felt: airports have to divert flights, rail services have been suspended and numerous educational institutions have cancelled classes. These developments highlight the ongoing challenges that extreme weather conditions pose to infrastructure and daily life in the region. On the morning of November 3, 2024, Spanish Transport Minister Óscar Puente reported via Platform X that Barcelona-El Prat Airport had already diverted 15 flights due to the severe weather. The heavy rainfall also caused leaks in various areas of the terminals and parking lots. The dangerous situation forced the authorities to temporarily suspend regional rail services to ensure the safety of passengers. In addition to the disruptions at the airport, Puente reported a landslide on Highway 27, which is significantly affecting traffic. According to initial estimates, one lane will soon be opened to traffic to reduce congestion. According to Spanish media reports, several streets in the province of Barcelona were also flooded. The images of the flooded streets and damaged infrastructure illustrate the urgency of the situation and the need for rapid action by the authorities. Educational institutions in the region have also been severely affected: around 150 schools and universities have cancelled classes to ensure the safety of students. School principals have been asked to find flexible solutions to keep class cancellations to a minimum. Warnings and prevention measures Particularly critical is

Eurowings introduces purchase option for SAF during the flight

Eurowings is the first airline in the world to introduce an option to purchase synthetic kerosene during flights. Passengers can now purchase a new organic fruit smoothie called "SAFt" in the Wings Bistro for 19,50 euros to offset the CO₂ emissions of their flights. The purchase includes compensation of 10 percent of flight-related CO₂ emissions through sustainable aviation fuel (SAF - Sustainable Aviation Fuel). The remaining 90 percent is offset by contributions to high-quality climate projects with partners such as myclimate, Climate Partner and SQUAKE. The new smoothie is produced in Germany without added sugar by the start-up kraftschluck and uses fruit from organic farming to shorten transport routes. SAF is obtained from biogenic waste, such as used cooking oils, and can be mixed with fossil kerosene, reducing CO₂ emissions by around 80 percent compared to conventional kerosene. Eurowings also continues to offer the option of CO₂ offsetting through the Planet Blu program, which can be booked before the flight via the website.

Proper vehicle lighting is particularly important in autumn

With the arrival of autumn and the associated shorter days, road safety has become an increasingly important focus. The Austrian Automobile, Motorcycle and Touring Club (ÖAMTC) warns drivers of the dangers of inadequate vehicle lighting. In particular, the setting of the daytime running lights could result in the rear of the vehicle remaining unlit in the dark, increasing the risk of rear-end collisions. To avoid this, ÖAMTC traffic psychologist Marion Seidenberger recommends using the automatic light system, which automatically activates the rear lights at dusk and in tunnels. A common misconception is that active dashboard lighting gives the impression that the vehicle is fully illuminated. Drivers should therefore familiarize themselves with the lighting settings of their vehicle to avoid possible fines of up to 10.000 euros. Switching on the vehicle lights correctly is not only a legal obligation, but also a crucial factor for your own safety and that of other road users.

Lufthansa relocates six Airbus A350-900s to Frankfurt

Lufthansa is moving six of its Airbus A2025-350s from Munich to Frankfurt for the 900 summer flight schedule, as "FrankfurtFlyer" reports. This step is due to the stalled deliveries of new Boeing 787-9 and 777-X. According to Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr, the group is currently missing 41 aircraft that were actually intended for use in Frankfurt. Although 2024 Boeing 15-787s were initially planned for 9, none of the ordered aircraft have arrived so far. The first Boeing 777-9 is now also not expected until 2026 at the earliest. In addition, staff shortages and growth-related restrictions are putting pressure on the Lufthansa hub in Munich. These have already led to a flattening of growth plans for Munich. Lufthansa also moved the last two Airbus A340-600s from Munich to Frankfurt and plans to finally decommission the ten-aircraft sub-fleet in 2025. Due to Boeing's delivery delays, passengers in Frankfurt will also have to wait longer for the new Allegris cabins that are planned for use in Boeing aircraft.

Air France stops flights over the Red Sea after missile sighting

Air France has temporarily suspended its flight route over the Red Sea after the crew of a flight to Madagascar noticed a suspected missile in sight. The incident occurred along the Sudanese coast, after which the Boeing 777-200ER and its crew returned to Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport. The airline reacted quickly and withdrew two more aircraft en route to the Middle East. As a result of these incidents, all flights over the Red Sea are being diverted, an Air France spokesperson confirmed. On Monday, flight AF934 therefore diverted to a route over Saudi Arabia and Oman before landing safely in Madagascar. The decision was made in line with the latest safety advice from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), which generally advises against overflights in Sudanese airspace. The background to this is the ongoing military tensions in the region, which have been exacerbated in particular by missile attacks and drone attacks. At the beginning of October, Houthi rebels from Yemen increasingly launched drone and missile attacks in the Red Sea, endangering the security of air and shipping routes. According to EASA, there is a high risk for civil air traffic due to military activities and the increased use of air defense resources in Sudan. Just recently, a civil IL-76 was shot down in Sudan, presumably by rebels. Last month, Air France was forced to divert a flight from Iran due to a sighting of missiles in the context of the ongoing conflicts in Israel and Gaza.
