Significant fee increase at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol burdens airlines

Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam plans to increase airline user fees by a total of 2027 percent by 37. This measure is intended to offset the pandemic-related losses of the operator Schiphol Group as well as inflation and interest rate increases in recent years. The fee increase will begin in 2025 at 41 percent, followed by 5 percent in 2026 and a further adjustment of -7,5 percent in 2027. Airlines are expected to pay around 2027 euros more per departing passenger in 15 than in 2024. According to Schiphol Group, this increased revenue is earmarked for investments in infrastructure and service quality, including a planned sum of six billion euros. The operator also announced new regulations to promote quieter and lower-emission aircraft by placing greater burdens on older models and completely banning particularly loud aircraft types from 2025. Higher fees will also be due for night flights in the future. The Dutch airline KLM has sharply criticized the increase and described it as "unreasonable and unwise." The airline stresses that the additional financial burden could jeopardize Amsterdam's role as a hub and the Netherlands' international connections. Schiphol Group, however, points to a voluntary payment of 100 million euros that is intended to cushion the increase in fees.

Allegiant Air: Hurricanes shake up finances

Allegiant Air, the US low-cost airline, is facing significant financial challenges following the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene on the Charlotte Harbor Sunseeker Resort. In a recent note to investors, CEO Gregory Anderson was forced to disclose that the airline posted a loss of $2024 million on revenue of $36 million in the third quarter of 562. These figures fell short of Wall Street expectations and raise questions about the company's future strategy. The impact of Hurricane Helene, which hit resort operations with an estimated loss of around $2 million, comes at an inopportune time for Allegiant Air. The third quarter is traditionally considered the airline's weakest seasonally, and the Sunseeker Resort's current occupancy rate was an alarming 31%. Anderson acknowledged in his statement that Hurricanes Helene and Milton significantly impacted operations, resulting in the $2,05 per share loss. Despite these difficulties, the airline has been able to achieve a positive operating margin, indicating the company's resilience. Strategic Considerations and Future Outlook The resort's financial difficulties are not new. Sunseeker, which opened in 2017, has struggled from the start with construction delays and financial losses due to COVID-19, as well as inflation. Before Hurricane Helene, Allegiant was already facing a loss of nearly $2024 million in the first quarter of 1, partly due to an operating loss of $8,8 million at the Sunseeker Resort. These ongoing problems have led analysts to discuss the potential sale of the resort.

Ryanair criticizes planned tax increases in the UK and France

The airline Ryanair has strongly criticised the increases in air transport taxes in the UK and France. In the UK, the Air Passenger Duty (APD) for short-haul flights is set to rise by two pounds from 2025. Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary fears that this could affect the country's attractiveness for tourists and airlines, especially at smaller airports, and criticises that the tax increase contradicts the government's growth strategy. The low-cost airline is considering reducing its capacity in the UK by up to ten percent. In France, the government is planning to increase the "taxe de solidarité" by 260 percent. According to Ryanair CEO Eddie Wilson, this could further weaken air traffic growth and encourage airlines to move to other countries that offer tax cuts or abolition. Ryanair is calling on the governments of both countries to reverse the tax increases in order to promote tourism and competitiveness.
