USA: A report reveals profit-boosting “junk” fees and their impact on travelers

The recent release of a report by the U.S. Senate takes a hard look at the practices of major U.S. airlines, showing that the introduction and adjustment of fees is increasingly geared towards profit-enhancing tactics. The report, edited by Richard Blumenthal, Chairman of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, sheds light on how airlines are using modern technology and customer data to set and adjust fees - with the clear intention of maximizing their profits. These findings, released on November 26, 2024, come at the right time: Thanksgiving weekend, one of the busiest travel times of the year, when many passengers are affected by the fees. The study reveals that airlines are using advanced algorithms to control and dynamically adjust their pricing. The techniques, often referred to as "junk" fees, include additional costs for seat reservations, baggage and other services that were traditionally included in the ticket price. These fees often appear in a hidden form on travelers' bills and add significantly to the overall burden on passengers. Blumenthal, who called the airlines' practices unethical and problematic, stated: "This report lifts the curtain on tactics like dynamic pricing that burden travelers and increase airline revenues." He announced that executives of the affected airlines must appear before the committee on December 4 to justify the practice of charging fees. The practice of charging fees as a source of revenue The five major U.S. airlines, including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, and ultra-low-cost carriers Frontier Airlines and Spirit Airlines, saw a notable increase between 2018 and 2023

Swiftair crash: An overview of the ongoing investigations

On November 25, 2024, the crash of a DHL Boeing 737-400 cargo plane near Vilnius Airport shook the city and sparked extensive investigations. The accident occurred in the morning and resulted in the complete destruction of the aircraft. The pilot, a Spanish citizen, was killed in the accident, while three other crew members - including Lithuanian, German and Spanish citizens - were injured. The fire department reported that the wreckage landed near a residential area, after which adjacent storage rooms and a vehicle caught fire. 13 people had to be evacuated from neighboring buildings due to the danger. The investigation to clarify the cause of the crash is complex and of great international importance. The Lithuanian authorities announced that the flight recorders, known in aviation circles as "black boxes", were recovered on November 26, 2024. These devices, consisting of the flight data recorder (FDR) and the cockpit voice recorder (CVR), are essential for the analysis of aircraft accidents, as they provide information about the flight history and the crew's conversations. Investigation and international support Vilmantas Vitkauskas, Vice Chancellor and Head of the National Crisis Management Center (NCMC), explained that Lithuania does not have the technical capabilities to analyze the data from the flight recorders itself. Therefore, they were sent to a laboratory in another EU country for further examination. "The first task is to protect the flight recorders from external damage and transport them safely to the laboratories," Vitkauskas explained to Lithuanian broadcaster LRT Radio. Laurynas Naujokaitis, Head of the Aircraft Accident Investigation Department at the Lithuanian Ministry of Justice, reported that German investigators have already joined the team.
