The year 2024 marks an outstanding chapter in the history of the DDSG Blue Danube. With the celebration of its 195th anniversary, the addition of two new ships and a growth course, the traditional shipping company is consolidating its key role in Austrian inland shipping. The expansion of the fleet through the takeover of the MS Austria and MS Vienna from the Lower Austrian Brandner Schifffahrt strengthens the tourist infrastructure in the UNESCO World Heritage region of Wachau in particular. The DDSG Blue Danube looks back on a history that goes back to 1829, when the First Danube Steamship Company was founded. Since its re-establishment in 1995 as a joint venture between Wien Holding and Verkehrsbüro, the shipping company has developed into a leading provider of tourist trips on the Danube. Today the company operates a fleet of nine ships that carry more than 400.000 passengers annually. With the addition of the MS Austria and MS Vienna, capacity has been significantly increased, particularly in the Wachau. The Wachau, known for its picturesque landscapes and historical sights, experienced a 46 percent increase in passenger numbers last year. A total of 129.024 guests took the opportunity to experience this region from the water. Challenges and successes However, the anniversary year 2024 was not without challenges. Vienna Airport: Customs seizes 5.000 counterfeit branded items

In mid-November, customs officers at Vienna Airport struck a major blow against product piracy. As part of a special operation in the cargo area of the customs warehouse, a total of 5.121 counterfeit branded products were discovered and confiscated in four shipments from Thailand. The find once again underlines the importance of consistent customs controls in international trade. The goods seized included a wide range of counterfeit items that were modeled on well-known brands. These included 1.402 pairs of shoes, 1.279 bags and backpacks, 415 sports shirts, 378 caps, 193 jackets, 318 pieces of jewelry, 115 belts, 318 tracksuits and 342 pieces of packaging material. According to investigations to date, the counterfeit products were to be transported via Austria to Great Britain and the Netherlands. Damage to the economy and consumers Finance Minister Gunter Mayr emphasized the relevance of such customs finds: “Product piracy is not a trivial offense. These counterfeits harm honest companies and, because of their often inferior quality, consumers as well.” Counterfeit products not only endanger the reputation of the brands concerned, but also result in economic losses for the original manufacturers. The inferior quality of the counterfeits also poses potential risks for buyers who unknowingly purchase such products. After the goods were seized, the rights holders were informed in order to initiate possible legal action. Combating product piracy is an important concern in Europe, which is effectively promoted by the cooperation of customs authorities and brand owners. This cooperation enables the rapid identification and combating of illegal flows of goods. International problem requires vigilance The origin of the seized goods from Thailand and their planned forwarding to Great Britain and the Netherlands underline the global nature of product piracy. Organised networks often use the

Air Baltic cancels thousands of summer flights due to engine problems

The Latvian airline Air Baltic is forced to make massive changes to its flight schedule for the 2025 summer season. A total of 4.670 flights from all of the airline's bases will be cancelled. The reason for this is significant delays in engine maintenance by the supplier Pratt & Whitney. The effects are far-reaching: In addition to the cancellation of 19 routes and the reduction in frequencies on 21 other connections, an estimated 67.160 passengers are affected. Pratt & Whitney has informed Air Baltic that several engines for the Airbus A220-300 fleet cannot be repaired in time. This means that many of the fleet's aircraft will have to remain grounded until 2025. The Airbus A220-300 is the backbone of the fleet, which is why the effects are particularly serious. The airline stressed that, like many other airlines around the world, it is affected by global supply chain problems. The situation once again highlights the dependence of modern airlines on the reliability of their suppliers. Especially for specialised components such as engines, a failure of a single supplier can cause massive disruptions to flight operations. Affected routes and passengers 19 routes are affected by the cuts, including connections to popular destinations within Europe. Frequencies on 21 other routes will also be reduced. Despite the significant restrictions, air Baltic plans to continue to offer more than 70 destinations in Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and the Caucasus region. Passengers whose flights have been cancelled are encouraged to manage their reservations using the "Manage my booking" function on the website.
