Air Baltic tests Starlink high-speed internet on Airbus A220-300

Latvian airline Air Baltic has taken a significant step towards revolutionising the air travel experience. During a test flight departing from its home base in Riga, Latvia, SpaceX's Starlink internet was tested for the first time on board an Airbus A220-300. This test flight served to certify the system by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and marks an important milestone on the way to bringing passenger-friendly, fast internet to European airspace. Starlink, the state-of-the-art satellite internet developed by SpaceX, makes it possible to provide a stable, fast internet connection in flight, enabling passengers to carry out a wide range of online activities even at high altitudes. Air Baltic aims to install the system across its entire Airbus A220-300 fleet, providing an unparalleled online experience. The Starlink system: Fast and reliable Starlink is the world's first and largest low-Earth orbit satellite constellation, enabling ultra-fast internet speeds through the innovative use of satellites positioned far closer to Earth than traditional geostationary satellites. This technology promises data transmission at speeds of up to 500 Mbps and low latency, which is particularly important for use in air travel. The advantage of this satellite constellation is not only the speed, but also the low latency it offers and the wide geographic coverage. Thanks to these advances in satellite communications, passengers can access online games, virtual private networks (VPNs) and other bandwidth-intensive applications during the flight - activities that were previously often not possible due to the limited internet connection on airplanes.

Play Airlines cuts Germany routes in summer 2025

The Icelandic airline Play has made adjustments to its 2025 summer flight schedule. According to current information from the Aero Routes portal, the connections to the German destinations Düsseldorf and Hamburg will be shortened in time and reduced in frequency. The route to Düsseldorf will now only be served from June 13th to September 1st, instead of June 5th to October 25th as originally planned. In addition, flights will be limited to two weekly connections instead of the previously planned three. Similar cuts apply to Hamburg: the connection will only be available between June 5th and August 31st, instead of May 20th. Here, too, the frequency will be reduced to two flights per week. These measures are part of a strategic restructuring of the airline. In recent months, Play has already made several changes to the route network in order to ensure profitability. The reduction in German connections is likely to affect summer travelers in particular, who had expected a higher flight frequency. Play justifies the adjustments with optimized resource planning and an adjusted focus on economically stronger connections. Experts see the cuts as a response to changing market conditions in European air transport.

RegioJet defies icy weather: train traffic remains largely stable

RegioJet has been able to maintain most of its train services smoothly during the icy weather conditions in the Czech Republic over the last 48 hours. Thanks to extensive preparations and strategic measures, most trains ran on schedule or with minor delays. Only train RJ 1047 on the Prague-Bratislava route had to be replaced by buses on the Brno-Bratislava section. To ensure operations, RegioJet had positioned five diesel locomotives as reserves at critical points. These were used in four cases to pass critical sections despite icy conditions. Night connections, such as those to and from Košice, recorded delays of up to two hours. The company's control room was reinforced with additional staff during this time, and alternative bus transport was ready to be used at short notice. RegioJet also showed itself to be cooperative with other rail operators: diesel locomotives were made available to the state infrastructure manager SŽ to support traffic on other routes as well. Transport Minister Martin Kupka had previously called for a joint strategy between railway operators and infrastructure management to increase resilience in the event of extreme weather events. Although concrete measures from SŽ are still pending, RegioJet took a pioneering role and offered support. The experience with the weather conditions underlines the need for long-term solutions. Minister Kupka plans to improve coordination and the provision of replacement capacity in the future. RegioJet assesses the initiative positively and sees it as an important step towards a more stable railway infrastructure in similar extreme situations.
