Nigeria considers restarting national airline under new name

According to the newspaper Punch, the Nigerian government is considering resuming talks with Ethiopian Airlines to establish a national airline. The failed "Nigeria Air" project is to be relaunched under a new name. This follows tensions between the two countries over the failed project in 2024, in which a consortium led by Ethiopian Airlines was to take a 49 percent stake in a joint venture with the Nigerian government. The "Nigeria Air" project, initiated by former President Muhammadu Buhari and former Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika, failed after a change of government. Under current President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo, it was dismissed as a sell-out to Ethiopian interests. Keyamo described it as a non-genuinely Nigerian initiative. The project was declared invalid by the High Court in Lagos on August 5, 2024, after the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) complained that it would harm local airlines. Investigations into alleged corruption by former officials are still ongoing. According to Punch, Keyamo's opposition escalated tensions and led to diplomatic interventions between Nigeria and Ethiopia. Ethiopian Airlines was said to have expressed dissatisfaction with Keyamo's stance. Both countries have been in talks. Keyamo recently visited Ethiopian Airlines but denied new talks on reviving the project. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, Permanent Secretary in the Nigerian Ministry of Aviation, clarified that when he mentioned the government's vision to rethink a national airline, he was not suggesting reviving the Nigeria Air deal with Ethiopian Airlines.

Mallorca wants to limit the number of rental cars

The rental car industry in Mallorca may be at a turning point. For the first time, associations are open to limiting the number of fleets, but only on the condition that there is sound data. The aim is to reduce traffic on the popular holiday island and to contain the chaos on the streets. So far, only rough estimates of the number of rental cars in Mallorca exist. The industry association Baleval has therefore commissioned an external study to obtain reliable figures. Estimates after the pandemic assumed around 100.000 vehicles, but this number has not yet been confirmed. Now precise data should serve as the basis for possible regulation. Julio Nieto, President of Baleval, emphasizes that his organization is not fundamentally opposed to limiting rental car fleets. "We are in favor of regulation, but it must be based on real data," he explains. The AEVAB association is also willing to talk. President Ramón Reus points to Ibiza and Formentera, where the number of rental cars has already been reduced. He believes this model is also conceivable for Mallorca and Menorca. The exact measures to limit it are still open. However, a decision is to be made with the involvement of the companies. The next phase of negotiations in the pact for the Balearic Islands will begin next week, in which concrete measures will be discussed. A decision on a possible reduction in rental car fleets on Mallorca could soon be imminent.

Qatar Airways adjusts summer flight schedule: More flights to Frankfurt, fewer to Zurich

Qatar Airways has adjusted its 2025 summer flight schedule. From July 1, 2025, the airline will increase the frequency of flights from Doha to Frankfurt from 18 to 20 per week. Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft will be used. From March 30, the start of the summer flight schedule, Qatar Airways will use the Boeing 787-8 instead of the Airbus A350-900 on one of the two daily connections to Vienna. This indicates a capacity adjustment on this route. On the connection to Zurich, the Gulf airline will reduce the number of weekly flights from 1 to 2 from May 9 to June 29 and from September 14 to 350. At the same time, the Airbus A1000-350 will be used on this route on various days instead of the A900-XNUMX. The adjustments to Qatar Airways' summer flight schedule affect both European destinations and the aircraft types used. While the frequencies to Frankfurt are being increased, the airline is reducing the offer to Zurich. There are also changes to the aircraft in Vienna and Zurich. The portal Aeroroutes.com was the first to report on the upcoming changes.

RegioJet records 550.000 passengers on the Prague–Przemyśl route

Since the launch of the train connection between Prague and Przemyśl on March 1, 2022, the private railway company RegioJet says it has already transported 550.000 passengers on this route. Originally launched as a humanitarian measure and organized in cooperation with the organization "Mensch in Not", the connection served as a means of transport for refugees and relief supplies in the first months of the Ukraine war. During the humanitarian phase, over 5.000 tons of material aid were brought to the war zone, while refugees were able to travel to Western Europe free of charge. After a few months, the route went into commercial operation to meet the continued high demand for connections between the Czech Republic, Poland and Ukraine. Today, the night train runs daily between Prague and Przemyśl, a city near the Polish-Ukrainian border, and allows transfers to Ukrainian Railways trains heading to Lviv, Kyiv and other cities. RegioJet emphasizes that the train is a more comfortable alternative to bus travel due to its sleeping cars. In addition to this connection, RegioJet launched another route from Prague via Košice to Chop in March 2024, which directly connects the Transcarpathian region of Ukraine. According to the company, 70.000 passengers have already been transported on this new connection, with a high occupancy rate of over 85 percent. The company continues to position itself with its train connections as an important option for travelers between Central and Eastern Europe.

USA: Aviation industry calls for emergency funding to improve air traffic control

The aviation industry in the United States is sounding the alarm: After a series of fatal accidents, including the tragic collision of an American Airlines regional jet with a Black Hawk helicopter over the Potomac River in Washington DC, representatives of the industry are calling for Congress to immediately provide emergency funding. The aim is to modernize the outdated air traffic control technologies and hire urgently needed specialists in order to counteract the ongoing staff shortages at US airports. The collision over Washington has reignited the debate about safety in US airspace. Although the air traffic controller responsible in this case was not directly held responsible for the accident, the incident nevertheless highlights structural weaknesses. The workload of many air traffic controllers is high, as they often have to coordinate the traffic of commercial aircraft and military helicopters at the same time. This is mainly due to the chronic understaffing of the control towers. According to the aviation associations Airlines for America, Aerospace Industries Association and International Air Transport Association, there is a shortage of around 3.500 air traffic controllers nationwide. More than 280 of the more than 300 air traffic control centers are understaffed, with some major airports such as John F. Kennedy International (JFK) and Newark Liberty International (EWR) operating at only 60% of required capacity. As a result, many controllers are forced to work overtime and six days a week. The FAA had already imposed flight restrictions on certain regions such as New York airspace last year to mitigate the problem. Industry calls for comprehensive modernization Industry representatives are urging Congress to quickly approve funding for the modernization of air traffic control systems and the hiring and training of new air traffic controllers. Singapore Airlines increases profit thanks to merger of Air India and Vistara

Singapore Airlines has reported a significant increase in profits in the third quarter of its fiscal year. Net profit was 1,63 billion Singapore dollars (around 1,17 billion euros), up from 659 million Singapore dollars a year earlier. This increase is mainly due to a one-off gain of 1,1 billion Singapore dollars generated by the merger of Air India and Vistara. The merger, which was completed last November, gave Singapore Airlines a 25,1 percent stake in the Air India Group. Previously, the airline held around 49 percent of Vistara. The merger of Vistara and Air India resulted in the creation of one of the leading full-service airlines in India. For Singapore Airlines, this represents a strategic expansion of its presence in the Indian market and a strengthening of its position in the region. Singapore Airlines' high profit shows how important strategic investments and mergers are for the growth and profitability of airlines. By acquiring a stake in the Air India Group, Singapore Airlines has not only increased its profits but also improved its long-term prospects.
