Ryanair reacts to Wizz Air route cancellation – special fares for Vienna-Naples

The Irish low-cost airline Ryanair has set up special fares at short notice for passengers affected by the cancellation of the Vienna-Naples flight route by Wizz Air. The Hungarian company had removed the route from its program with only two weeks' notice. Ryanair is now offering tickets starting at 39,99 euros on its six weekly flights between the two cities. Ryanair has also announced that a new connection between Vienna and Salerno will be launched in summer 2025. The route will be served twice a week and will further improve Austria's connection to the southern Italian region of Campania. The decision comes in the context of increased competition between European low-cost airlines, particularly on routes between Central Europe and Italy. "Once again, Ryanair is stepping in to prevent passengers from being stranded following the cancellation of the Vienna-Naples route by Wizz Air. Ryanair will continue to offer reliable and affordable connections for Austrian passengers, with 6 weekly flights on the same route and 2 weekly flights on our new Vienna-Salerno route in summer 25. Ryanair's rescue fares are now bookable at ryanair.com," said Andreas Gruber of Ryanair.

Lufthansa Group introduces comprehensive changes to the frequent flyer program “Miles & More”

The Lufthansa Group is facing one of the biggest changes to its frequent flyer program "Miles & More", which will come into effect on June 3, 2025. The biggest innovation is the introduction of a dynamic pricing model for redeeming air miles. In the future, the mile values will no longer be fixed and uniform, but will be flexible based on various factors such as ticket price, flight route and travel class. The Lufthansa Group describes this decision as a response to the changing needs of its customers and the desire for more flexibility in using the program. The previously proven system of fixed mile values, in which the number of miles required for flight awards was always the same, will be broken up in the future. Instead, the mile value for flight awards will now be influenced by various factors. The prices of the flight tickets, the respective flight route and the travel class will be included in the calculation. In addition, there are seasonal differences: while the miles should be cheaper in the low season, they could increase accordingly in the high season. Dynamic pricing represents a significant change in the current system and ensures that the mileage value is adjusted more flexibly to market conditions. The Lufthansa Group is reticent about the exact amount of the mileage value. It is not yet known whether the miles will actually be lower than the previous fixed price models in the low season, which is likely to lead to a broad discussion about the impact on frequent flyers. It remains to be seen how dynamic pricing will affect the attractiveness of the program in the long term. Standardization of the tariff system and simplified flight awards Another important step in

Lufthansa expects delivery of new Boeing 787-9 soon

Lufthansa expects the imminent delivery of several new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, which have so far remained in the USA due to a lack of approval for the new "Allegris" seats. As the Aero portal reports, the necessary stress tests by the US aviation authority are to take place at the end of February. As soon as certification has been obtained, Lufthansa wants to take over the aircraft quickly, even if Business Class must remain closed for the time being. The new Dreamliners are intended for the expansion of Lufthansa's intercontinental traffic. The "Allegris" seats are intended to offer passengers in Business Class and First Class an improved travel experience. The delayed delivery of the aircraft has led to adjustments in Lufthansa's fleet planning. Lufthansa has ordered a total of 29 Boeing 787-9s. Some of the aircraft are to be delivered this year, others next year. The new aircraft are to be used primarily at the Munich hub.

Increase in air traffic accidents in 2024 – IATA reports rising accident rate

The number of accidents in air transport rose slightly in 2024, according to the International Airlines Association (IATA). There was one accident for a total of 880.000 flights, which corresponds to a rate of 1,13 accidents per million flights. For comparison: In 2023, this rate was 1,09. A total of 46 accidents were recorded worldwide, in which 244 people lost their lives. Compared to the previous year (42 accidents with 72 fatalities), there is a significant increase in the number of fatalities. However, the IATA emphasizes that the frequency of accidents in air transport remains very low. There were a total of 40,6 accidents in 2024 on 46 million flights. Although the numbers have increased, IATA CEO Willie Walsh emphasizes that accidents in aviation are still extremely rare. The five-year average for the years 2020 to 2024 is one accident per 810.000 flights, while in the period from 2011 to 2015 this figure was one accident per 456.000 flights. Regional differences are also noticeable: while no accidents were reported in the region of the successor states of the Soviet Union, the accident rate in Africa was particularly high at 10,59. Europe was in the middle of the field with an accident rate of 1,02 per million flights. The German Aviation Association (BDL) had given a different figure for fatalities in air traffic at the beginning of the year, pointing out that 334 people died in air traffic accidents worldwide. This figure also takes into account casualties on the ground and planes shot down over conflict zones, which the IATA does not record in its statistics.

Midway: Boeing 737-800 narrowly avoids collision with Challenger 350

A dramatic incident occurred at Chicago Midway International Airport that prevented a potentially catastrophic collision between a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-800 and a FlexJet Bombardier Challenger 350. The incident, which is causing a stir in the aviation industry, was averted at the last second by the Boeing pilots by performing a so-called "go-around". The incident is now being investigated by the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). On the afternoon of the day in question, the Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-800 with the flight number 2504 was en route to landing on runway 31C at Chicago Midway Airport. At the same time, the FlexJet Challenger 350 was en route to another runway. But suddenly the unimaginable happened: The Bombardier Challenger 350 taxied onto runway 31C while the Boeing 737-800 was approaching for landing. The Boeing pilots recognized the impending danger and performed a manual go-around to avoid a possible collision. The maneuver was successful and the Southwest Airlines plane was able to take off safely. A recording of the radio traffic between the tower and the aircraft involved provides insightful clues as to what might have led to the incident. There had apparently been misunderstandings in the communication between the pilots of the Challenger 350 and air traffic control. The FlexJet jet had originally been instructed to stop in front of runway 31C. However, the pilots do not appear to have understood this instruction correctly, which led to

Lufthansa and ITA Airways start codeshare partnership

The Lufthansa Group and ITA Airways have entered into a far-reaching codeshare agreement that allows travelers to seamlessly combine the route networks of both airlines. From the 2025 summer flight schedule, over 100 new codeshare connections will be bookable, allowing passengers to conveniently transfer between ITA Airways flights and the Lufthansa Group network airlines - including Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines and Air Dolomiti - with just one ticket. Baggage is checked directly through to the destination airport, and frequent flyer programs such as Miles & More and Volare can still be used. The cooperation includes both domestic Italian connecting flights from Rome-Fiumicino and international connections to Malta, Athens, Sofia and Tirana. For the first time, Lufthansa customers will have the opportunity to reach destinations such as Alghero, Pantelleria and Reggio di Calabria. Conversely, ITA Airways passengers will in future be able to use Lufthansa Group flights for connecting flights in Northern, Central and Eastern Europe. With the expansion of the cooperation, ITA Airways is moving further into the network of the Lufthansa Group, whose takeover of the Italian airline is still in the approval phase of the European competition authorities. The codeshare agreement represents an important step in the closer integration of the two airlines and should, in the medium term, enable ITA passengers to access a total of 250 destinations within the Lufthansa network.

EU tightens sanctions against airlines that help Russia evade sanctions

In the wake of Russia's attack on Ukraine, the European Union has adopted its 16th package of sanctions, which primarily affects the aviation sector. New measures are aimed specifically at airlines that help Russia circumvent Western sanctions, for example by supplying aviation goods to Russia or operating Russian domestic routes. These sanctions represent a further escalation of the existing trade and economic blockades, which are aimed at financially weakening the Russian war effort and increasing pressure on the country. One of the key provisions of the new package of sanctions concerns airlines from third countries that circumvent sanctions imposed by the EU by transporting aviation goods to Russia or even operating Russian domestic routes. Airlines that engage in such activities risk losing their operating license in the EU in the future. This measure particularly affects those companies that use clever circumvention strategies to enable Russia to continue to have access to Western aviation resources that are difficult to access due to the sanctions. Aircraft spare parts, for example, are now difficult to obtain in Russia due to export bans from the EU, Great Britain and the USA. The West has introduced these sanctions to weaken the Russian aviation industry by severely limiting the availability of spare parts and technology. The impact of these sanctions is clearly felt in the Russian aviation industry, as many aircraft are no longer operational due to a lack of spare parts. To counteract this shortage, Russia has tried to attract airlines from third countries that are willing to fill this gap and fly to Russia. The EU is now reacting sharply to such activities in order to further increase the pressure on Russia.
