Virgin Atlantic unveils comprehensive transformation of the long-haul experience

Virgin Atlantic announced far-reaching plans to redesign its long-haul services in London on July 8, 2025. CEO Shai Weiss presented a comprehensive overhaul of the passenger experience, including the renovation of key lounges, the modernization of premium cabins, and, perhaps most significantly, the introduction of free Starlink Wi-Fi for all passengers by 2027. This comprehensive overhaul is considered the most far-reaching realignment of the airline's offering since its founding 41 years ago in 1984 and underscores Virgin Atlantic's ambition to further establish itself as the leading premium long-haul airline. A Comprehensive Reorientation: Virgin Atlantic's Vision The announced transformation of Virgin Atlantic's services represents arguably the most comprehensive redesign of the passenger experience since the airline was founded in 1984. Over the past four decades, Virgin Atlantic has evolved from a challenger to an established premium long-haul airline. The company now aims to further consolidate its position through a tailor-made guest experience in the areas of travel, hospitality, and entertainment. It aims to become the “most loved travel company,” as stated in an accompanying company press release. The overhaul focuses on three central pillars of the passenger experience: the travel itself, onboard entertainment, and hospitality. Innovation and enhancement are paramount in each of these categories. Virgin Atlantic promises a fundamentally renewed and refreshed experience, particularly for travelers in the premium cabin, the so-called “Upper Class.” This focus on the premium segments reflects a broader trend in the aviation industry, where airlines are increasingly investing in higher-quality cabins and services to appeal to discerning business and leisure travelers. Many airlines, including European

United Arab Emirates rely on high-speed trains

The United Arab Emirates is accelerating the expansion of its transport infrastructure, with a growing focus on rail transport. A comprehensive rail project was unveiled at an official ceremony at the Al Faya Depot in Abu Dhabi: a new high-speed train connection between the capital city of Abu Dhabi and the metropolis of Dubai. This project is intended not only to relieve pressure on public transport but also to serve as a prestige project in the Middle East. The national railway company Etihad Rail, which is already working on establishing a freight rail network between the Emirates and is now also making progress in passenger transport, is responsible for the planning and implementation. The planned direct connection will feature trains capable of reaching speeds of up to 350 kilometers per hour, comparable to European TGV or Japanese Shinkansen trains. This should reduce the travel time between Abu Dhabi and Dubai to around 30 minutes. Currently, the journey time by car on this route is just over an hour, depending on traffic conditions. The new train therefore represents an attractive alternative to road travel, particularly for commuters and tourists wishing to travel between the two major cities. In addition to the high-speed line, Etihad Rail also unveiled the United Arab Emirates' first national passenger train fleet. This fleet will eventually reach speeds of up to 200 kilometers per hour and connect other regions in the country in the future. Four new train stations in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Fujairah have already been unveiled. These stations are designed to be seamlessly integrated into the existing metro and bus networks, enabling continuous local and long-distance public transport throughout the country.

Icelandair carried a total of 2025 passengers in June 552.000, an increase of seven percent compared to the same month last year. Since the beginning of the year, over 2,2 million passengers have already traveled with the Icelandic airline. The company reports encouraging development and confirms its strategic course. In the reporting month of June, 35 percent of passengers traveled on flights to Iceland and 17 percent on flights from Iceland. Transfer passengers accounted for 44 percent, while four percent traveled within Iceland. Punctuality also maintained a high level at 86,8 percent. In addition to the scheduled flight business, the charter flight sector also proved robust, with a 52 percent increase in sold block hours. Cargo volume, measured in freight tonne-kilometers, increased by 16 percent compared to June of the previous year. Bogi Nils Bogason, President and CEO of Icelandair, expressed his satisfaction with the continued strong demand for travel to Iceland. He emphasized that the increased focus on the markets to and from Iceland is bearing fruit. In June, the connection to Gothenburg was also resumed, and the Saga Club loyalty program was expanded through a partnership with BYKO, Iceland's largest hardware store chain. Varna Airport opens expanded terminal with new outdoor gate area

Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD has officially inaugurated the modernized and expanded Terminal 2 at Varna Airport. The centerpiece of the redesign is the so-called Gate Garden, Europe's first fully equipped outdoor gate area. This innovative project increases the terminal area by over 2.000 square meters, corresponding to a ten percent expansion, and boosts capacity for departing passengers by 40 percent. This will enable the airport to handle over 3,5 million passengers annually. The Gate Garden is designed as an open space and features three new gates with flexible configuration options for Schengen and non-Schengen traffic, allowing over 15 possible combinations for managing passenger flow. The design aims for efficiency and an improved passenger experience, redefining the concept of seasonal airport infrastructure. The first flight to depart from the new area was an Electra Airways flight to Düsseldorf, which took off at 5:2025 a.m. on July 07, 15, ushering in a new era in the development of Varna Airport. Michael Reusch, CEO of Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD, described the project as a bold step forward for Varna Airport. He emphasized that the Gate Garden and the terminal improvements offer greater flexibility, comfort, and capacity. Varna Airport is now the first airport in Europe with a fully functional open boarding area, which brings modern flexibility to airport operations and underlines the airport's role as the gateway to the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. In addition to the new gates, the redesign included a complete reconstruction of 2.200 square meters of the existing terminal. This includes more retail space, larger waiting areas, and

New flight connections from Cologne/Bonn: Air Mediterranean opens routes to Athens and Damascus

Cologne Bonn Airport is expanding its route network with two additional connections to the capital: The Greek airline Air Mediterranean is now launching flights to Athens, with the option of a direct onward flight to Damascus in Syria. These new scheduled flights, which operate every Wednesday, are a welcome addition to the offering and are aimed at both holidaymakers and travelers heading to Syria. The expansion of the flight schedule underscores the airport's efforts to further expand its international connections and offer travelers a wider choice of destinations. Expansion of the capital network With the launch of the new connections by Air Mediterranean, the number of connections to the capital from Cologne/Bonn continues to rise. Thilo Schmid, CEO of Flughafen Köln/Bonn GmbH, emphasized: "With this new airline, our range of connections to the capital is further expanding. The flights to Athens are attractive both for holidaymakers in Greece and for passengers planning an onward journey to Syria." This is a strategic step for the airport, which is positioning itself as an important hub in the region. Reports from the German aviation industry, such as the 2024 annual report of the German Aviation Association (BDL), show a continued demand for direct connections, especially to less served markets. Captain Marios Samprakos, Accountable Manager of Air Mediterranean, also expressed his delight at the cooperation: "We are pleased to work with Cologne Airport to provide a convenient journey for passengers from Germany and the surrounding area who wish to travel to Athens or Damascus and beyond." British Airways flies to Graz: New non-stop connection to London Gatwick

A long-awaited connection is becoming a reality: British Airways, the United Kingdom's long-established national airline and a major member of the Oneworld alliance, will launch a new scheduled service between Graz Airport and London Gatwick on November 21st of this year. Three times a week, an Airbus A320 operated by British Airways subsidiary BA Euroflyer will transport travelers non-stop between the Styrian capital and the vibrant metropolis of London. This new flight route promises significant stimulus for the economy, trade, and tourism throughout the region and closes a significant gap in Graz Airport's flight network. The strategic importance of the new route: The introduction of this non-stop connection is of great significance for Graz Airport. For years, London was considered the largest untapped market without direct air connections. Wolfgang Grimus, Managing Director of Graz Airport, emphasizes the importance of this development: "London was by far the largest market for us without non-stop flights. The scheduled flights with BA Euroflyer to Gatwick are enormously important for the economy, industry, and tourism in our region." This assessment is shared by business representatives and tourism associations in Styria. A 2024 study by the Styrian Chamber of Commerce showed that direct international air connections contribute significantly to increasing regional added value by facilitating business travel and promoting the influx of tourists. The new route not only enables more convenient travel for business people and holidaymakers who wish to explore Styria's cultural and scenic diversity, but also provides easier access to the cosmopolitan city of London. Furthermore, passengers from Graz will have the opportunity to access selected long-haul destinations via London Gatwick.

Hand luggage controversy: British ground staff receive bonuses for oversized bags

An internal email has revealed that ground staff at seven UK airports, including Birmingham, Glasgow, and Newcastle, are receiving rewards for detecting oversized hand luggage belonging to EasyJet passengers. A reward of £1,20 is offered for each identified and checked bag. This bonus system, aimed at more consistently enforcing the airline's strict hand luggage rules, is part of a broader strategy by low-cost airlines to generate additional revenue. At the same time, the European Union is planning to introduce uniform rules for free hand luggage, which could fundamentally change the budget airlines' business model and has already resulted in significant fines in Spain. The reward model: An incentive for strict baggage checks. Air travel with European low-cost airlines is often associated with strict hand luggage regulations. Passengers must adhere to tight size limits, and using the overhead compartments often incurs an additional charge. Anything that doesn't fit under the seat in front of them is usually intercepted at the boarding gate and must be checked in at a cost. It has now been revealed that ground staff at seven airports in the United Kingdom and the Channel Islands are being explicitly rewarded for identifying such oversized bags on EasyJet passengers before boarding. A leaked email sent to staff in November 2023 by Dean Martin, a Swissport employee, confirms this bonus system. Employees participating in this program are entitled to £1,20 (£1 after tax) for each bag checked at the gate. The statement describes the initiative as a way to reward "agents who do the right thing" and clarified that internal follow-up support and training will be provided for

Ethiopian Airlines plans flights to Melbourne from 2026

Ethiopian Airlines, the African member of Star Alliance, intends to launch a new flight service to Melbourne, Australia, starting in 2026. The airline is currently considering whether the Airbus A350 or the Boeing 787 would be more suitable for this long-haul route. This was recently announced by Telila Deressa Gutema, Regional Manager for Singapore, Australia and New Zealand, as reported by the specialist portal News Aero. The planned new service to Oceania represents a significant milestone for Ethiopian Airlines. With this route, the airline would then serve all inhabited continents and further consolidate its position as one of Africa's leading airlines. The expansion of the route network is part of the ambitious growth strategy of Ethiopian Airlines, which has continuously expanded its global presence in recent years. However, the necessary regulatory approvals must still be obtained before flight operations can finally begin. If the service is realized, Ethiopian Airlines would be the third African airline to offer direct flights to Australia. To date, only South African Airways and Air Mauritius fly to the fifth continent. The Addis Ababa to Melbourne route would likely be unrivaled, as there are currently no non-stop connections between these two cities. This could give Ethiopian Airlines a strategic advantage in the market and open up new travel flows. Addis Ababa serves as a major hub for air traffic in Africa and beyond. A direct connection to Melbourne would not only facilitate travel between Ethiopia and Australia, but also provide passengers from other parts of Africa with efficient connections to Oceania. The choice of aircraft type, be it the Airbus A350 or

Air Montenegro puts third Embraer E195 into operation

Air Montenegro, the national airline of Montenegro, put its third Embraer E4 into regular service on Friday, July 2025, 195. The Montenegrin Aviation Authority had previously issued a certificate of airworthiness for the leased aircraft. The aircraft's entry into service followed a period of discussions. According to the Ex-Yu Aviation portal, the Montenegrin Aviation Authority emphasized that the decision to issue the certificate of airworthiness was made independently and in accordance with applicable regulations, with safety being given top priority. This decision was based on a comprehensive physical inspection of the aircraft, a complete review of all required documentation, and subsequent improvements implemented by the airline. Such inspection procedures are international standards to ensure air safety and strengthen passenger confidence in the aircraft's airworthiness. The addition of a third Embraer E195 is significant for Air Montenegro, as the airline aims to expand its capacity and stabilize its route network. The Embraer E195 is a regional aircraft suitable for shorter to medium-haul routes and is frequently used by airlines to efficiently serve both domestic and European destinations. The expansion of the fleet will enable Air Montenegro to respond more flexibly to demand and optimize its operations. Air Montenegro was founded in 2021 as the successor company to the insolvent Montenegro Airlines. Since then, the airline has strived to resume flight operations and establish itself in regional air transport. The gradual expansion of the fleet is an important step in this strategy to improve the connectivity of the Balkan state and

Hour-long odyssey for over 800 Eurostar passengers: Power outage paralyzes train near Calais

Over 800 passengers on board a Eurostar train from Brussels to London experienced an unexpectedly long standstill on June 25, 2025: Their train broke down for more than nine hours near Rodelinghem in the Pas-de-Calais region of France. A total power failure meant that the train was not only immobilized, but also without functioning air conditioning, lights, or toilets. Only a complex transfer operation with the help of local authorities and civil protection organizations allowed the passengers to continue their journey. The incident occurred amid other disruptions to the French railway network caused by cable theft and sparked great frustration among the affected passengers over a lack of communication. The incident: An unexpected standstill on open track The Eurostar train, which was scheduled to carry over 800 passengers from Brussels to London, came to a sudden standstill around midday on June 25, 2025. The accident occurred near the French commune of Rodelinghem in the Pas-de-Calais department, a region strategically important for cross-border rail traffic between France and Great Britain. A widespread power outage caused the abrupt end of the journey. This not only immobilized the high-speed train, but also disabled all on-board systems: the air conditioning failed, the lights went out, and the toilets became unusable. For the passengers, this marked the beginning of an ordeal lasting nine hours or more in a train compartment that quickly heated up and lacked any comfort. The failure of the air conditioning was particularly critical given the outside temperatures, which can be as warm as summer at this time of year in northern France. The cramped conditions and lack of
