Wizz Air closes Abu Dhabi branch

Wizz Air Abu Dhabi will cease operations on September 1, 2025. This was confirmed by parent company Wizz Air Holdings. The reasons cited for the closure of the joint venture in Abu Dhabi were engine reliability issues in a hot and demanding environment, geopolitical volatility, and regulatory hurdles. Instead, the parent company aims to strengthen its presence in Europe, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe. This decision comes just one week after the airline had already cut a third of its route network in the United Arab Emirates and marks the end of an ambitious but short-lived expansion attempt in the Middle East. The end of an ambitious project: Reasons for the closure The cessation of operations of Wizz Air Abu Dhabi on September 1, 2025, marks the end of a strategic project that only began flights in January 2021. The parent company, Wizz Air Holdings, cited several key reasons for this decision in its statement: József Váradi, CEO of Wizz Air, commented on the decision: "Supply chain bottlenecks, geopolitical instability, and limited market access have made it increasingly difficult to maintain our original ambitions. Although this was a difficult decision, it is the right one given the circumstances." A spokesperson for Wizz Air stated that the company could not comment further on the decision at this time. This news comes just one week after the airline had already decided to drastically cut a third of its route network in the United Arab Emirates. This suggests that the problems that are now leading to the complete suspension of operations have been present for some time and are

DRF Luftrettung invests in ten new H140 helicopters

Last week, DRF Luftrettung signed a purchase agreement with Airbus Helicopters at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport for the acquisition of ten H140 helicopters. With this significant investment, the non-profit organization is consistently continuing its fleet renewal strategy and setting important course for the future development of air rescue in Germany. The new helicopters are scheduled to gradually replace the H2028 models currently in use starting in 135 and further improve patient care. Dr. Dirk Petry, Head of the H135 & H140 Programs, and Thomas Hein, Head of the European Region, were present for Airbus Helicopters at the official contract signing. DRF Luftrettung board members Dr. Krystian Pracz and Roman Morka signed the document. Dr. Pracz emphasized that the H140 represents an innovative and future-proof addition to the fleet, particularly in light of the currently discussed reforms in hospitals and emergency rescue. The H140 is a new development in the field of light twin-engine helicopters and is positioned by Airbus Helicopters as a further development with a larger cabin and improved features. The planned fleet expansion with the ten H140 helicopters is an important step in adapting to the expected new legal regulations in the healthcare sector. The larger cabin of the H140 allows for the carriage of additional medical equipment and offers better treatment options on board. This directly benefits patient care, as even more complex medical emergencies can be adequately treated during transport. Dr. Dirk Petry of Airbus Helicopters emphasized that DRF Luftrettung was able to contribute its many years of expertise in air rescue to the development of the H140, which has been a significant contribution to the company's over three decades of experience.

ÖAMTC provides advice on rental car accidents on vacation

With the start of the summer travel season, the legal advice service of the Austrian Automobile, Motorcycle and Touring Club (ÖAMTC) is experiencing an increase in inquiries about accidents involving rental cars. To protect travelers from high costs and unnecessary hassle, the ÖAMTC provides important information on preparation and what to do in the event of an accident. Nikolaus Authried, a lawyer from the ÖAMTC legal advice service, emphasizes the importance of knowing the necessary steps and choosing a suitable insurance option, as insufficient coverage can result in horrendous costs in an emergency. After an accident involving a rental car, it is crucial to keep a cool head. Putting on a high-visibility vest, securing the accident scene, and administering first aid in serious accidents are essential steps. Even in cases of mere body damage, it is usually necessary to immediately notify the car rental company and the police, as otherwise insurance coverage could be voided, warns the ÖAMTC. Depending on the country and the rental car company or insurance company, a police report may be required even in the case of property damage. It is especially important to document accident sites and damage comprehensively with photos. Upon return of the rental car, the rental company must issue a damage report, sign it, and give a copy to the renter. Under no circumstances should documents be signed whose content is incomprehensible, or false information be provided. A practical case from Italy, in which an ÖAMTC member was involved in a rental car accident, illustrates the relevance of the club's emergency legal assistance. The member received immediate support by telephone and important information on how to proceed, such as notifying the rental company and, if necessary, the police, and documenting the damage with photos. In the event of an accident that was not the renter's fault, the rental company's motor vehicle liability insurance will cover the costs.

London Luton Airport creates up to 150 new jobs

London Luton Airport (LTN) is creating up to 11,5 new jobs as part of a major £150 million redevelopment program. The investment program includes the creation of two new aircraft maintenance and repair hangars and a logistics consolidation center for the airport. These new facilities will be housed in previously vacant hangars formerly owned by Monarch Airlines, which were acquired by LTN in February 2024. The measures are intended to improve the airport's operational efficiency and strengthen the local economy. One hangar will house a new maintenance facility for easyJet aircraft and an apprentice training center, creating more than 30 highly skilled engineering positions and training up to 40 apprentices annually. Another major airline operator will also establish a maintenance and engineering facility in the second hangar, creating additional engineering positions. These investments reflect the confidence of major airlines in the future development of London Luton Airport, especially since the airport recently received approval for long-term, sustainable growth. In addition to the hangars, a new logistics consolidation center will be commissioned. This center will receive and process all deliveries for the airport in the future, ensuring a smooth flow of goods to the ever-growing number of shops, restaurants, and other businesses throughout the airport. This facility is expected to create a further 30 new jobs. Alberto Martin, Chief Executive of London Luton Airport, emphasized that as the operator of the airport, the company is committed to supporting a strong and empowered community and making investments that support the growth of businesses, jobs, and incomes for the local population.

Portugal's government initiates privatization of TAP: European aviation giants vie for shares

The Portuguese government has officially resumed the long-awaited privatization process of the national carrier, TAP Air Portugal (TAP). Given the interest of several major European airline groups in a potential stake in the airline, this process is expected to become a major event in the European aviation industry over the next twelve months. The aim is to sell a 49,9 percent stake in TAP as a first step, with the option to sell further shares if market conditions and demand are favorable. This decision comes at a time when TAP is experiencing one of its strongest business periods in its history, increasing the airline's attractiveness to investors. The government's sales intentions and industry interest On July 10, 2025, the Portuguese government announced its intention to sell a 49,9 percent stake in TAP Air Portugal within the next year. Prime Minister Luis Montenegro expressed his "convince that there will be many interested parties" in this planned partial sale, which also includes a five percent stake for the airline's employees. The possibility of selling even more capital if market conditions and demand allow for it leaves potential investors room for future developments. This strategy indicates that the government does not rule out full privatization at a later date, should this be in the best interest of the state and the airline. So far, three of the largest European airline groups have already expressed interest in TAP. Should one of them be successful, this could lead to further consolidation of the already competitive

Motorhomes on the rise in Austria: Number of registrations increases significantly

Traveling by motorhome is enjoying growing popularity in Austria. Since 2020, the number of registered motorhomes in the Alpine republic has risen sharply. While just under 2020 vehicles were registered in 33.000, this number rose to over 2024 by the end of 48.000. This development, based on data from Statistics Austria, underscores the ongoing trend toward spontaneous and flexible travel that has become established in recent years. A recent survey by AutoScout24.at confirms that Austrians associate traveling by motorhome primarily with independence and flexibility. However, the rising demand for motorhomes is also having an impact on the used car market. Since June 2020, average prices for used vans and minibuses have risen by around 58 percent. The average purchase price, which was still €2020 in June 17.269, reached €2025 in June 27.222. This corresponds to a price increase of almost 10.000 euros within five years. Nikolaus Menches, Country Manager of AutoScout24 in Austria, attributes this price increase to the continued high demand for flexible family and leisure vehicles, as well as a limited supply. This price development is a clear indication of the growing value of the entire segment. The AutoScout24.at survey, for which Innofact AG interviewed 2024 Austrian car owners in October 525, sheds light on the motives of motorhome travelers. Six out of ten Austrians associate motorhomes with flexibility and independence, as they allow them to spontaneously decide on their destination and length of stay. This spontaneity is particularly important for women (67 percent) and people between 50 and 65 (63 percent).

This was confirmed by the Ministry of Privatization in Islamabad on July 9, 2025. The pre-qualified bidders include two consortia and two individual companies. This step marks a crucial phase in Pakistan's ambitious plans to privatize the ailing airline and open up new economic prospects for it. The subsequent due diligence reviews are intended to pave the way for a transparent and competitive divestment. The candidates in the running: two consortia and two individual bidders. The pre-selection of the four interested parties for the divestment of PIA was approved during a meeting in Islamabad chaired by Adviser to the Prime Minister on Privatization, Muhammad Ali. This decision followed a "thorough review" of the Statements of Qualification (SOQs) submitted by five potential investors. The pre-qualified potential investors include well-known players from Pakistan's business community. The Ministry of Privatization stated that the pre-qualified parties will now enter the buy-side due diligence phase. This is a crucial next step in a transparent and competitive privatization process. During this phase, bidders will be given detailed access to PIA's books, assets, and operations to conduct an informed evaluation and prepare their final offers. The Pakistani government intends to sell at least 51 percent of the ailing airline's shares, but has indicated that it would be willing to relinquish its entire stake in future negotiations. This would give the new owner complete control over the airline's strategic direction and turnaround.

ARBÖ provides travel tips for the start of the holidays in Austria

With the start of the holiday season across Austria, numerous families are embarking on their summer vacation. To ensure the least stressful journey possible, the Austrian Automobile, Motorcycle and Cyclists' Association (ARBÖ) has compiled practical advice for drivers. These tips range from optimal travel planning to vehicle technical inspections, ensuring travelers have a smooth journey to their well-deserved break. A key point of the ARBÖ's recommendations concerns the timing of their trip. Experience has shown that arrival and departure days are the busiest and therefore most stressful. To avoid traffic jams and long waiting times, the ARBÖ recommends so-called acyclic driving. This means setting off early in the morning or late in the evening during the week, if possible. Before setting off, drivers should also inform themselves about current traffic information and possible alternative routes. The ARBÖ information service is available by phone, and current traffic reports are also available online. The ARBÖ also emphasizes the importance of loading the vehicle correctly. Forward-looking planning is essential here. Heavy cargo should always be stowed underneath and directly against the rear seat wall to avoid compromising driving stability. Necessary items such as drinks, provisions, medication, and travel documents should be easily accessible in the passenger compartment. When using bicycle racks, the vehicle's permissible total weight must be observed. Adjusting tire pressure to the load and correctly adjusting headlights are equally important to ensure road safety. Traveling with children, in particular, requires special preparation. Long car journeys can quickly become boring or stressful for the little ones. The ARBÖ recommends
