Extreme freezing rain leads to a complete shutdown of operations at Vienna-Schwechat Airport.
A severe winter weather event led to the complete closure of Austria's largest air traffic hub in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Vienna-Schwechat Airport had to suspend all takeoffs and landings due to freezing rain and extremely low ground temperatures. As the entire apron, taxiways, and both runways transformed into a sheet of ice within a very short time, officials were forced to halt operations for safety reasons. An official NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) was issued, initially stipulating the airport's closure until at least 11:00 a.m. local time. Hundreds of passengers are affected by flight cancellations, significant delays, and diversions in international air traffic. Winter maintenance crews are working continuously with heavy equipment, but are battling the rapid formation of new ice. Challenges Caused by Freezing Rain and Ground Frost: The meteorological cause of the current traffic chaos lies in a combination of prolonged sub-zero temperatures in the preceding days and an approaching warm front bringing moisture in the form of rain. Because the ground is frozen solid, the rain freezes instantly, forming a layer of black ice. Airport spokesperson Peter Kleemann explained that conventional de-icing measures only have a very short-term effect under these conditions. Immediately after mechanical and chemical treatment of the surfaces, a new layer of ice forms due to the continuing precipitation. Vienna Airport's winter service, considered one of the most efficient in Europe, has been operating at maximum capacity since last night. Large-area sweepers and gritters are being used, applying special de-icing agents based on acetate or formate. These agents are necessary because conventional road salt is ineffective in these conditions.
