The year 2020 was definitely a year to forget for Klagenfurt Airport, because Berlin and Palma de Mallorca did not lose two routes, but at the beginning of 2021 there are no scheduled flights again. Of course, that also had an impact on the numbers.

Due to the officially ordered lockdown in spring 2020, Klagenfurt Airport came to a complete standstill in April - June 2020. The summer gave hope for a short time, but with the tightened travel regulations from September and Lockdown 2, the regular service stopped again. All tourist winter charters were canceled by the organizers and the scheduled flights were suspended, with a few exceptions around the holidays.

The consequence of this is that the Carinthian airport could only handle 49.395 passengers. In direct comparison with the value for 2019, this means a decrease of 76,4 percent. According to the airport, two thirds of the passengers flew before the first lockdown. Only a third used the flight offers during the rest of the year.

“You can see from the numbers that we started 2020 well and then COVID19 brought us to a standstill. The slump in traffic figures affects all Austrian airports to the same extent. We are in the Austria-wide average, ”says Nils Witt, Managing Director of KFBG Kärntner Flughafen Beteiligungs GmbH. yourself. "Despite the very tense situation, we succeeded in maintaining and securing the number of employees at KFBG by optimizing internal processes and implementing restrictive cost-cutting measures."

In Klagenfurt, it is not yet known how things will continue in 2021. The industry is expected to recover slowly. “Serious flight planning is not possible in the current volatile situation,” Witt regrets.

Klagenfurt figures at a glance:

year 2019year 2020change
Passengers (Line & Charter)209.27849.395-76,40%
Flight movements (line & charter)3.198878-72,50%
Aircraft movements (GAC)19.17413.812-27,96%
