A technical malfunction at air traffic control provider Skyguide has led to a temporary airspace closure over Switzerland.

A serious technical malfunction at the Swiss air safety organization Skyguide led to massive disruptions to civil air traffic at Zurich Airport and throughout eastern Swiss airspace on Sunday morning.

The system failure was triggered by the short-notice implementation of a military no-fly zone around the Bürgenstock resort, where high-level peace talks between the United States and Iran were taking place. For security reasons, the airspace east of Bern had to be completely closed for several hours, resulting in the cancellation of numerous flights and significant delays in European flight schedules. After specialists successfully resolved the software error, operations were gradually restarted throughout the day, while authorities initiated a thorough analysis of the system architecture.

Short-term activation of a security zone for diplomatic summits

The origin of the logistical and technical chaos lay in a breaking diplomatic message. Since the official decision to hold the highly sensitive secret negotiations between the government delegations from Washington and Tehran in Switzerland was only finalized and formalized the previous Saturday, the security authorities had only a minimal window of time to implement the necessary protective measures. To protect the foreign dignitaries and to guarantee national security, the Federal Council ordered the establishment of a temporary no-fly zone with strict entry restrictions over Central Switzerland.

The technological integration of this geographically precisely defined restricted zone into the highly complex, automated radar display systems of Swiss air traffic control led to an unforeseen system conflict. A serious malfunction occurred during an attempt to quickly integrate the restricted zone's data coordinates into the operational systems. This software error simultaneously affected both the primary air traffic control center in Dübendorf, responsible for the entire upper airspace and overflights, and the control tower at Zurich Airport, which coordinates takeoffs and landings at Switzerland's largest hub.

Precautionary airspace closure and activation of the crisis management team

To minimize any risk in the airspace and to guarantee the collision safety of aircraft in flight at all times, Skyguide management reacted immediately according to strict emergency protocols. It was decided to temporarily close all Swiss airspace east of the Bern line to regular transit and scheduled traffic. Simultaneously, the air traffic control's internal crisis management team convened to coordinate with Eurocontrol's European partner organizations and to reroute international air traffic around Switzerland.

The closure had an immediate and serious impact on the early morning flight operations at Zurich-Kloten Airport. For a considerable portion of the early morning, not a single passenger or cargo aircraft was permitted to take off, leading to long queues on the taxiways and overcrowded waiting areas in the terminals. Landing operations were maintained under difficult conditions and with manual staggered landings until approximately 06:45 a.m. local time. Strict exceptions to the landing bans were made only for aircraft already in their final descent and for special aircraft transporting official government delegations to the Bürgenstock Resort.

Troubleshooting and gradual normalization of flight operations

In the control centers, IT specialists and air traffic control engineers worked under intense pressure to locate and resolve the data error in the radar system. Once the source of the error—the interplay between existing data and the newly added geodata of the restricted zone—was isolated and corrected, the authorities gave the green light at approximately 07:45 a.m. for a gradual resumption of takeoffs and landings in Zurich. The systems subsequently ran stably again; however, the initial total failure triggered a long series of operational delays.

By late morning, Zurich Airport's handling capacity was still reduced by around 40 percent, as aircraft could not be processed at their usual frequency and staff also had to deal with rebooking stranded passengers. According to official figures, a total of 12 arriving flights and 14 scheduled departures had been completely canceled by midday. In addition, more than 60 departures experienced significant delays, some of which continued throughout the rest of Sunday.

Long-term security measures and international reactions

Although operations at Zurich Airport largely stabilized during the afternoon and the radar systems were functioning correctly, air traffic control remained on alert for the rest of the day and the following night. Skyguide announced that, as a purely precautionary measure, overflight capacity for international transit traffic would remain reduced until Monday morning. However, the activation of additional, alternative airspace sectors in neighboring countries kept the impact on European air traffic to a minimum.

In an official press release, the company apologized to the affected passengers and partner airlines for the inconvenience caused and emphasized that the safety of Swiss airspace was never compromised. However, the incident highlights the technological vulnerability of modern air traffic hubs when it comes to adapting quickly to geopolitical events and will necessitate a detailed review of the interfaces between military airspace security and civil air traffic control.
