The German regional airline German Airways has completed the purchase and financing of five Embraer E190 passenger aircraft as planned.
As revealed in a publication by the parent company, Kolibri Beteiligung GmbH, the transaction was handled through a financing partner specializing in the aviation industry at market-standard terms. With this step, the company is exercising agreed purchase options from existing lease agreements and gradually transferring the aircraft into its own fixed assets.
The airline's fleet currently consists exclusively of Embraer E190 aircraft. The management team, consisting of Wolfram Simon-Schröter and Maren Wolters, announced the gradual conversion of the fleet structure at the beginning of the year. Following the completion of the current five-aircraft package, the company plans to acquire the remaining three leased aircraft through options during 2027. In June 2026, the regional airline also increased its overall capacity by adding a ninth aircraft of the same type to its fleet.
German Airways primarily operates in the wet-lease and charter sectors, leasing aircraft and crew to other European airlines. The transition from leasing to ownership reduces the airline's monthly rental expenses and secures access to fleet capacity. However, acquiring ownership also entails a long-term commitment of capital and transfers the financial risk associated with the residual value of the used aircraft to the company.
Aviation experts consider the consolidation to a single aircraft type to be economically sound, as this limits costs for maintenance, spare parts, and staff training. Nevertheless, the company remains dependent on demand in the market for capacity balancing with other airlines. The business model requires high utilization of the aircraft on behalf of third parties in order to sustainably recoup the financing costs incurred for purchasing the fleet.
