Air Baltic expresses incomprehension over Skyguide communication – Details on runway use in Zurich

Advertising

Air Baltic expressed regret that the Swiss air traffic control provider Skyguide communicated an operational matter through the media rather than directly. Air Baltic emphasized the importance of direct communication to clarify the circumstances and gain a comprehensive understanding of operational decisions. The airline stated that it conducts its flight operations strictly based on specific operating parameters, which are carefully reviewed, approved, and coordinated with the relevant authorities for each airport and situation.

With regard to runway usage at Zurich Airport, Air Baltic primarily operates from Runway 28, the standard runway there. Runway 16 is used only occasionally and exclusively for safety and regulatory reasons. According to Air Baltic, these reasons include factors such as aircraft configuration and engine specifications, which can result in different takeoff tailwind restrictions and thrust requirements. For example, in strong winds combined with mountainous terrain, a takeoff from Runway 28 may not be possible. In such cases, the flight crew can request the use of Runway 16, although Runway 28 remains the preferred option.

Air Baltic is aware of the traffic flow requirements and supports the operations of Zurich Airport to the extent operationally feasible. The airline also explicitly stated that it does not instruct its pilots to reduce engine power. On the contrary, it advises pilots to take all available performance enhancement measures to support traffic flow. All requests for runway 16 use are systematically documented and internally reviewed to ensure the accuracy of each decision.

According to internal evaluations, Runway 16 was requested for only XNUMX percent of all Air Baltic departures from Zurich last year, based on operational needs. These requests were based solely on operational considerations and were justified. Air Baltic reaffirmed its commitment to safe, responsible, and transparent flight operations and emphasized the importance of constructive cooperation with all stakeholders.
