Holidaymakers planning flights to popular European destinations this summer can look forward to lower ticket prices. According to the comparison portal Check24 Flight costs to the 30 most frequently booked cities fell by around nine percent compared to the previous year. This indicates an easing in the short- and medium-haul air travel market.
Particularly noteworthy is the Croatian Zadar, where prices for flights to the coastal city fell by an average of 36 percent. Passengers also paid an average of €190 for flights to the British capital, London, a reduction of around €47, or 20 percent, compared to the previous year. In addition, ticket prices for flights to Alicante, Spain, fell by 19 percent. This development, even for cities with high demand such as Alicante or Porto, is an indication of growing capacity and intensified competition on popular routes, according to the comparison portal. Christian Meier, Managing Director of Flight at Check24, explained that in the case of Zadar, a high density of offers ensures the low prices.
For those considering booking, Check24 recommends comparing destinations within a country, as there can be significant price differences between the most frequently booked cities in countries like Spain, Italy, and Greece. Meier advised looking for alternatives, as flight prices between two cities often differ by several hundred euros. Last-minute bookers Flexibility in the departure date and a comparison of different destination cities are also recommended in order to find the best deals.
The comparison portal also published a ranking of the most popular long-haul destinations for the 2025 summer holidays. First place was again taken by USA, followed by Thailand in second place and Canada. Japan improved from sixth place last year to fourth place, indicating growing interest in Far Eastern destinations. Check24's calculations were based on flight bookings with arrivals during this year's summer holidays compared to the previous year.
