Airborne tribute for the runner-up world champion: Swiss paints a heart shape over Zurich

The Swiss national ice hockey team finished the 2026 World Championship by winning the silver medal, achieving a historic success for the national sport.

As a sign of recognition for this achievement, the national airline Swiss carried out an extraordinary flight maneuver on the night of June 1, 2026. Immediately after the final match, a commercial airliner traced a precise heart shape in the airspace over Switzerland shortly after takeoff from Zurich Airport. The action was implemented in close coordination with air traffic control Skyguide and was intended to symbolize the collective enthusiasm of the population for the team, which had prevailed against numerous favorites throughout the tournament.

The regular route LX1848 from Zurich to Thessaloniki was used for this special flight. The Airbus A320neo took off at 23:01 p.m. and operated under the special call sign SWR26WM, directly referencing the final date and the World Championship. After takeoff, the aircraft executed a precisely calculated left turn, headed back towards Zurich, and completed the heart shape with further specific maneuvers before rejoining its standard route to Greece. Such so-called "flight arts" are technically demanding and require precise prior approval from civil aviation authorities, as they briefly disrupt regular air traffic flow in dense European airspace.

Additional industry analyses show that such marketing campaigns are increasing in air travel to accompany national events of high emotional significance. Swiss has been an official partner of various Swiss sports federations for years and uses the media presence of major events like the Ice Hockey World Championship to enhance its brand profile. Experts point out that the logistical complexity of such a flight path change during ongoing operations is considerable, as safety distances to other aircraft and noise abatement regulations on the ground must be maintained at all times. The flight route could be followed by fans and aviation enthusiasts worldwide via real-time tracking services such as Flightradar24, resulting in a wide digital reach.

Winning the silver medal marks another milestone for the Swiss Ice Hockey Federation (SIHF) in the professionalization of the sport. After reaching the final, which was only decided in the closing stages, the team is expected back at Zurich Airport today, Monday, where an official reception is planned. Swiss's initiative underscores the social relevance of ice hockey in Switzerland, which, alongside football, is one of the sports with the highest spectator numbers. The cooperation with Skyguide ensured that the flight maneuver could be carried out without delays to other flights, despite the late hour and nighttime flight operations.
