Anniversary year at Zurich Airport: 15 years of observation deck B

Observation Terrace B at Zurich Airport will celebrate its 15th anniversary in 2026, marking its reopening in December 2011 as part of the Dock B reconstruction project. Spanning approximately 7.000 square meters, the terrace has become one of Switzerland's most popular destinations, attracting around 300.000 visitors annually. To commemorate this milestone, Zurich Airport Ltd. has organized a comprehensive program of events, featuring monthly highlights for the public throughout the year. A key element of the celebrations is the monthly anniversary day: on the 15th of each month, guests are granted free admission, complemented by expert commentary on current flight operations from on-site specialists.

Additional research into the site's history highlights the technological development of the visitor offerings. The terrace features a walk-through apron tower and interactive media kiosks that provide real-time data on departing and arriving aircraft. The anniversary program is complemented by collaborations with government institutions. For example, the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (BAZG) presents service dog demonstrations during themed days, while Zurich's Protection & Rescue service offers insights into the work of the airport fire brigade and ambulance service. These partnerships underscore the airport's function as a complex working environment that extends far beyond mere passenger transport.

For the summer season, extended opening hours and special events such as "Day Time Parties" are planned, positioning the airport as an event location for a younger audience. A particular technological highlight is the collaboration with the Runway 34 flight simulator, which allows visitors to pilot a virtual "Super Connie." Social aspects are also considered in the event calendar: On specific holidays such as Mother's Day, Father's Day, and Grandparents' Day, the respective target groups receive free admission. The airport is strategically using the anniversary to strengthen ties with the local population and promote fascination with civil aviation and the associated technical professions.

From an economic perspective, the observation deck is an essential part of Zurich Airport's non-aviation business model. Through a combination of catering, merchandising, and paid sightseeing tours, the area generates stable revenue outside of flight operations. The continuous modernization of the infrastructure, such as the integrated children's flying field, ensures its appeal to families. With its current anniversary program, Zurich Airport is reinforcing its position as one of the most visitor-friendly airports in Europe and creating a platform for direct exchange between aviation experts and the general public.
