The Austrian travel industry is starting the year 2025 with positive expectations. A recent survey by the Austrian Travel Association (ÖRV) shows that both the winter and summer seasons are experiencing strong demand. Early booking in particular is enjoying great popularity again, and travelers are increasingly opting for individual experiences and cruises.

More than half of Austrian holidaymakers continue to spend their holidays in their own country. With its lakes, mountains and cultural attractions, the Alpine republic offers a wide range of recreational opportunities. Classic summer destinations such as Carinthia, Tyrol and Styria are particularly popular.

When it comes to foreign travel, Italy is the undisputed leader. Around 35 percent of summer trips booked are to the southern neighboring country. The regions of Veneto, Tuscany and the Adriatic coast are particularly popular. Croatia comes in second place with 27 percent, while Germany is in third place with 18 percent. Other popular destinations are Greece, Spain and Turkey.

There are also clear favorites when it comes to long-distance travel: the USA and Thailand are very popular with Austrian vacationers. While Thailand attracts visitors with its beaches and cultural attractions, many travelers are drawn to the United States, especially to metropolises such as New York, Miami or Los Angeles.

Changing travel behavior: Car remains dominant, train increases

The preferred mode of transport shows a certain continuity. More than half of travelers continue to use the car for vacation trips, especially when traveling within Austria or to neighboring countries such as Italy and Germany.

However, rail is becoming increasingly important, with its share now at fifteen percent, thanks to better connections and a growing awareness of alternative travel options. Flights still play an important role, especially for long-distance travel to Asia or North America.

Tailor-made travel and cruises continue to be on trend

There is a clear change in the demands of holidaymakers. Standardised package holidays are less of a focus. Instead, there is growing interest in individually designed experiences. "Travellers value a unique experience away from the crowds," explains ÖRV President Eva Buzzi. Tailor-made tours, special accommodations and exclusive activities are in demand.

Cruises also continue to enjoy unbroken popularity. In addition to the comfort and entertainment on board, the route remains the decisive criterion for booking. Trips in the Mediterranean and along the Norwegian fjords are particularly in demand.

Travel budget stable despite inflation

Despite the economic developments of recent years, the travel industry is proving resilient. The average travel budget of Austrians is around 2.000 euros per person. This figure indicates that vacations continue to be very important and many are prepared to spend more on quality and comfort.

In view of the positive booking situation and the strong early booking trend, the ÖRV is expecting another year of growth. "It could well be that we will break the 30 million holiday trip mark this year," predicts Eva Buzzi. The trend towards high-quality travel in particular could continue to consolidate and ensure stable growth in the industry.
