Austria: Federal Army conducts supersonic training

Advertising

The Federal Army plans to conduct training flights in the supersonic range from May 6th to 10th and May 21st to 24th, 2024, during which Eurofighter pilots will train interception maneuvers. Two supersonic flights are planned each day between 08:00 a.m. and 16:00 p.m.

Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner stresses the importance of efficient air defense in the face of global conflicts and announces the signing of a letter of intent to join the "Sky Shield" missile defense umbrella. Flying in the supersonic range is an essential part of pilot training and is indispensable for functioning airspace surveillance.

In order to minimize the propagation of sound, various measures are taken, including reducing acceleration phases, defining flight areas outside metropolitan areas and completing flights above 12.500 meters altitude.

The supersonic speed of the Eurofighter is around 1.200 km/h, which can create shock waves on the ground that are perceived as sonic booms. The strength of this boom depends on various factors, including altitude, terrain and weather conditions.
