Since the beginning of December 2023, Austrian passports have had a new design. This can be applied for in district administrations and authorized municipal offices since December 1, 2023.

“When revising the passport, protection against counterfeiting and identity protection were the top priority,” reported Interior Minister Gerhard Karner at the presentation. The passport has been completely redesigned: it has a data page made of polycarbonate (plastic) and also contains the QR code already known from the ID card. This enables simple and electronic control with the free “CHECK-AT” app from the Ministry of the Interior.

With the introduction of the “New Passport” there will be no additional costs for citizens. The travel document still costs 75,90 euros or 30 euros for children up to 12 years old. It's free up to the age of two. Passports that have already been issued remain valid. The application process also continues to work as usual.
