“Travel and vacation in your own country are an essential cornerstone for Austria’s tourism future. Austrians are passionate Austria lovers when it comes to vacationing in their own country. The various offers between the cities such as Vienna, Salzburg or Innsbruck and the alpine natural landscape with the numerous leisure activities, but also the wine regions or the thermal baths are widely used. “The domestic guest also makes a significant contribution to promoting regional economic growth,” said Tourism State Secretary Susanne Kraus-Winkler.

As the latest data from Statistics Austria shows, Austrians took a total of 2023 million trips at home and abroad from July to September 9,3 - an increase of over two million compared to 2019, of which 3,9 million trips were around 750.000 more in their own country. In addition, two out of three short vacations were spent domestically. Compared to 2019, the proportion of people who took at least one holiday trip within Germany rose from 30,8 percent to 32,7 percent.

“These figures from the domestic market of origin are confirmation of how interesting and diverse the Austrian tourism offering is viewed by its own population. The numerous measures taken by the federal government to maintain the purchasing power of the Austrian population were also essential,” said Kraus-Winkler.
