Award for airport infrastructure: Vienna passenger lounge receives industry prize

The “Vienna Lounge”, operated by Flughafen Wien AG, has been awarded the “Priority Pass Excellence Award” in the European region category for the third time in a row.

The award is based on evaluations by the operating company Collinson International, which manages a global network of approximately 1.900 airport lounges and uses customer reviews from passengers for its assessment. According to Vienna Airport management, more than one million passengers visited the airport's central waiting areas in the past calendar year, 2025, which include the award-winning "SKY Lounge".

Located in the terminal area, the space covers approximately 2.500 square meters and includes work areas, restrooms, and conference zones overlooking the airport apron. Since 2021, the catering services have been operated by the Austrian DoN Group under a service contract. For the visual design, the airport company is also collaborating with the Leopold Museum in Vienna, which is providing reproductions of works from the Viennese Modernist period for the exhibition spaces. These measures aim to offer transit and premium passengers a regionally themed environment while they wait for their flights.

Aviation analysts view investments in ground infrastructure as a crucial factor in the competition among European hubs for high-margin passenger segments. As airlines' flight offerings and fares on major routes become increasingly similar, airport operators are attempting to generate additional revenue through exclusive waiting areas, such as lounge access and partnerships with credit card providers or frequent flyer programs. However, critical market observers point out that maintaining such large spaces, given rising cleaning, energy, and personnel costs, can negatively impact the operating results of non-aviation businesses if passenger numbers decline during weaker economic months.

Furthermore, the high frequency of over one million users raises questions regarding service quality during peak times. With very dense passenger volumes, especially during the morning and evening departure waves, the spatial capacity of airport lounges regularly reaches its limits. In practice, this often leads to waiting times at the entrance and a reduction in comfort for paying customers. The long-term challenge for Vienna Airport management is to maintain the contractually agreed quality standards with catering and service partners, even with persistently high passenger numbers, without additional expansion of space.
