The Portuguese regional airline Azores Airlines continues its flight program to Germany and will also offer direct connections between Frankfurt am Main and Ponta Delgada on the Azorean island of São Miguel in the summer flight schedule 2027.
Operations will commence on March 28, 2027, and run until October 21. During the shoulder seasons, from March to May and in October, two weekly flights are scheduled. In the traditionally high-demand summer months of June to September, the operator will increase the frequency to three weekly flights. Airbus A320 family aircraft will be used.
With this announcement, the airline, which operates as Azores Airlines, will continue its seasonal service on this route for the third consecutive year. The flight connection serves the ongoing demand for holidays to the Portuguese archipelago in the North Atlantic. In addition to passengers from the Rhine-Main region, the airline also uses its Frankfurt hub to transport connecting passengers to the Atlantic islands via codeshare agreements and interline partners.
The use of narrow-body Airbus A320 aircraft on transatlantic routes offers airlines a flexible solution for covering seasonal peaks without having to deploy wide-body aircraft. However, this connection competes with other providers and hub connections, such as those via Lisbon or Porto with TAP Air Portugal. For passengers, direct flights offer travel time savings, but require the airline to maintain a consistent seat occupancy rate to cover operating costs on the overseas route.
Industry observers point out that limiting the flight schedule to the higher-earning spring and summer months restricts the airline's financial risk. Since demand in the Azores is heavily dependent on seasonal tourism, year-round operation of German airports remains economically difficult to justify. The stability of booking figures for the Frankfurt–Ponta Delgada route for summer 2027 will be revealed by the upcoming booking period.
