In summer 2025, Eurowings will expand its route network from Salzburg to include one of Europe's most popular cities: Barcelona. From April 11, there will be direct flights to the Catalan metropolis twice a week. This new connection not only enriches the already diverse range of summer destinations from Salzburg, but also fulfills a long-held wish of passengers and the region's economy.
The announcement was received with enthusiasm, as Barcelona is considered a vibrant center of art, culture and history and is an ideal starting point for city trips and excursions to the surrounding regions. It is particularly noteworthy that the new route was realized in cooperation with Eurowings, the most important airline partner of Salzburg Airport.
Another milestone for Salzburg Airport
With the new connection, Salzburg Airport is sending a clear signal of the attractiveness of its location. Bettina Ganghofer, Managing Director of the airport, emphasized: "Barcelona has been a big wish of our guests for years. After intensive negotiations, we were able to win the best partner for this route in Eurowings." The new connection is to be offered until the end of October 2025 and is part of an extensive summer program that already includes numerous dream destinations.
Existing destinations include popular Greek islands such as Rhodes, Kos and Zakynthos, as well as other attractive locations such as Olbia in Sardinia, Lamezia Terme in Italy and Larnaka in Cyprus. Spain is a particular focus, with destinations such as Ibiza, Palma de Mallorca, Gran Canaria and Tenerife. The new Barcelona connection continues this success story.
Barcelona: More than just a metropolis
Barcelona offers an incomparable mix of history, architecture and joie de vivre. The city is known for the works of the visionary architect Antoni Gaudí, especially the world-famous Sagrada Família and the colorful Park Güell. The Gothic quarter of Barri Gòtic also captivates visitors with its medieval alleys and historical buildings such as Barcelona Cathedral.
Barcelona also stands out for its location on the Mediterranean, which attracts streams of visitors to the extensive beaches and bustling port. Sights such as the Castell de Montjuïc or the Plaça Reial can easily be combined with a walk or a cable car ride, which also offers spectacular views of the city and the sea.
Catalonia: A Paradise for Explorers
For travelers who want to explore the region beyond the city limits of Barcelona, Catalonia offers a wealth of options. The rugged mountains of Montserrat with their famous Black Madonna attract pilgrims and nature lovers alike. Wine connoisseurs can visit the Penedès wine region and sample first-class wines from traditional wineries. The charming coastal town of Sitges with its picturesque streets and culinary highlights is also a popular destination.
For the more adventurous, the Pyrenees offer spectacular hiking routes and medieval mountain villages. Those interested in history can travel back in time to the Roman archaeological sites of the Vallés Oriental. This diversity makes Barcelona and its surroundings an unforgettable travel destination.
A strong sign for the region
With the new direct connection to Barcelona, Eurowings is sending a strong signal of its commitment to Salzburg Airport. Reinald Frankewitz, Head of Network Relations at Eurowings, explained: "We are delighted to be able to offer guests in Salzburg another direct connection to one of Europe's top travel destinations." The route is not only a benefit for the airport, but also strengthens the regional economy and tourism.
