Border guards at Britain's largest airport, London Heathrow, began a four-day strike today. The background to this is a conflict between the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union and the Home Office over new duty rosters that have been in force since April 2023.
Around 650 employees are going on strike to protest against the working hours, which they perceive as stressful. The employees then plan to work strictly according to the rules and refuse to work overtime from September 4 to 22. However, the strike is unlikely to have a major impact on travellers, as border controls only take place at the point of entry. The union is calling for more flexibility in scheduling to improve the wellbeing of employees. The Interior Ministry is stressing its willingness to continue the talks and to minimise disruption for travellers as much as possible.
