After eight months of rolling use of the two runways at BER, both runways will be used simultaneously again from December 1st.

The decisive factor for this decision was to be able to guarantee stable flight operations even in wintry weather conditions. If there is snow or ice, a lane can always be cleared and a lane used. While between 2020 and 2021 monthly flight movements were recorded in the winter months of December 3.000 to March 4.600, FBB is expecting at least twice as many take-offs and landings this winter (December to March). Operations on the southern runway ceased in December 2020. In view of the low traffic figures caused by the pandemic, costs and expenses had to be reduced. From April 2020, FBB used both of its runways on a monthly basis.

“The use of just one runway in the past few months was necessary from an entrepreneurial point of view and was operationally well represented. We were able to reduce our expenses and still manage the number of flight movements, which has increased since the summer, well. With a view to the winter months, but especially with a view to the increase in passenger numbers, which is forecast for the coming year, we now need both railways again. Using two runways at the same time also ensures more stable winter flight operations, more routine processes among employees and thus a bit of airport normality that has been regained ”, says Aletta von Massenbach, CEO of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH.
