Austrian Airlines is expanding its flight offerings to coincide with the second anniversary of its Bremen-Vienna route. Since the route's launch in May 2024, the destination has become a regular fixture in Bremen Airport's flight schedule.
To meet increasing demand, the airline is increasing the frequency of flights from three to four per week. During the summer season, flights will operate on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. However, during the peak travel months of July through September, the flight will be shifted from Thursday to Friday to offer greater flexibility for weekend travelers.
The route is primarily operated with Embraer 195 aircraft, which have approximately 120 seats. With a flight time of about 95 minutes, the route represents an important link for commercial traffic between Northern Germany and Austria. Via the hub in Vienna, passengers from the Weser region also gain access to Austrian Airlines' extensive route network, which is particularly dense in Eastern Europe and the Middle East. This strengthens Bremen's connection to international markets beyond its direct European destinations.
Vienna Airport serves as one of six major international hubs for Bremen's air passengers. In addition to Vienna, direct connections to hubs in Frankfurt, Munich, Istanbul, Amsterdam, and Zurich are crucial for the regional airport's global connectivity. Its integration into the Star Alliance network also allows travelers seamless baggage handling and coordinated connecting flights. Market observers interpret the increased flight frequencies as a sign of stable economic development for the route, which benefits both business travelers and city tourists.
For Bremen Airport, the continued operation of Austrian Airlines represents a crucial safeguard of scheduled flight capacity. While many regional airports are struggling with service consolidation, the development of the Vienna connection is proving successful in the catchment area between the Ems and Elbe rivers. The airline, a subsidiary of the Lufthansa Group, also utilizes the connection to attract transfer passengers for its long-haul flights from Vienna. With the addition of a fourth weekly flight, the service is now being enhanced to a level that allows for more efficient travel planning for diverse user groups.
