The state-owned Chinese airline China Eastern Airlines is expanding its presence in the European market as part of its current summer 2026 flight schedule. From June 7th, the company will increase the frequency of flights on the strategically important route between Shanghai Pudong and Frankfurt am Main.
Instead of the previous daily service, the route will now be served nine times a week. A Boeing 777-300ER, featuring a three-class configuration and offering high capacity, particularly for business travelers between the two major financial centers, will be used exclusively on this route.
In parallel with its expansion in Germany, the airline is also increasing its commitment to Switzerland. From June 16, 2026, the connection between Shanghai and Geneva will be upgraded from four weekly flights to a daily service. China Eastern Airlines will operate this route using the Airbus A350-900, one of the most modern long-haul aircraft in its fleet. Industry analysts interpret this move as a response to the rising demand for travel between China and Europe, which is further fueled by the expanded visa-free travel regulations for citizens of various European countries, including Germany and Switzerland.
The capacity expansion comes against the backdrop of a general recovery in the Asian air travel market. China Eastern Airlines is using its Shanghai base as a central hub to connect passengers from Europe to its extensive domestic network in China and to destinations in Southeast Asia. The increased frequencies to Frankfurt and Geneva also underscore the airline's goal of regaining market share from its European competitors, some of whom face longer flight times due to having to circumvent Russian airspace, while Chinese carriers can continue to use direct routes.
Additional data from the flight planning service "Aeroroutes" indicates that the airline is also stabilizing or slightly expanding its capacity in other European metropolises such as Paris and London. However, the focus on Frankfurt and Geneva demonstrates the prioritization of economically strong centers. By increasing to nine weekly flights to Frankfurt, the airline is offering more flexible travel options for commuters and logistics companies, as the Boeing 777-300ER provides significant belly cargo capacity for air freight between production sites, in addition to its passenger capacity.
