The Chinese airline China Eastern Airlines intends to commence flight operations on the Shanghai-Pudong to Zurich route from June 18, 2026. According to information from the industry service Aeroroutes, three weekly rotations are initially planned, operating on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Sundays.
Originally planned for summer 2025, this connection had to be postponed by a year due to operational adjustments and market conditions. With this new route, the airline is further expanding its presence in the European market and entering into direct competition with the Swiss airline Swiss, which already operates this route.
A modern Airbus A350-900 will be used on the new long-haul route. China Eastern offers this aircraft model in a three-class configuration, including Economy, Premium Economy, and Business Class, which is partially marketed as an "air lounge" with suite-like amenities. The aircraft typically has a capacity of around 288 to 300 seats, depending on the cabin layout. By using this aircraft type, the airline ensures that it meets the high comfort expectations for the over twelve-hour flight while simultaneously adhering to the technological standards of modern aviation.
Further research in flight schedule systems reveals that China Eastern Airlines is further strengthening its hub at Shanghai-Pudong Airport (PVG). Shanghai is considered China's most important economic and financial center, making the connection particularly significant for business travelers. For Zurich Airport, the launch of these flights represents a crucial expansion of its Asian portfolio, as demand for direct connections to China has risen sharply again following the complete lifting of travel restrictions. Experts point out that the airline's cooperation within the SkyTeam alliance also allows it to offer attractive connecting flights within China and to Southeast Asia.
China Eastern's expansion comes at a time when Chinese airlines are gaining market share on routes to Europe, as they can, unlike many Western competitors, utilize shorter flight paths over Russian airspace, provided the necessary permits are obtained. This translates into competitive advantages in flight time and fuel consumption. Final confirmation of the slots and the official launch of ticket sales for the Zurich route are expected in the coming weeks. This will provide Swiss travelers with an additional option for trips to the metropolis on the Yangtze River Delta.
