Cologne/Bonn Airport promotes climate protection with electric aircraft tugs

Cologne/Bonn Airport is consistently continuing its path towards climate-neutral airport infrastructure with the introduction of new electric aircraft tugs.

Two fully electric models replace the previous diesel-powered variants and can even move large aircraft such as the Boeing 777. In addition to improved battery performance and quick-charging options, the tugs offer emission-free and quieter operation. This should save up to 15 tons of CO₂ annually.

The new tractors are part of the airport's long-term strategy to convert all apron vehicles to climate-friendly technologies by 2035. More than 130 electric vehicles and devices, including passenger stairs and baggage tractors, are already in use. In addition, the mobile ground power supply is also being electrified: From 2024, 25 fully electric ground power units will be used, supported by funding from the Federal Ministry for Digital Affairs and Transport.

These measures are key components of the airport's climate protection plan, which aims to achieve complete climate neutrality by 2045. The changes not only reduce emissions, but also reduce noise levels and optimize the efficiency of aircraft handling.
