For the first time, Cologne Bonn Airport now has a direct connection to the 110 kilovolt high-voltage grid. This infrastructure project enables a three-fold increase in energy supply compared to the previous medium-voltage connection and is intended to ensure a future-proof and more powerful power supply. The new connection strengthens the airport's position as an important economic location for Cologne and the surrounding region.
To realize the project, RheinEnergie laid an approximately 7,5-kilometer-long high-voltage cable. Westenergie Netzservice GmbH was responsible for the planning and construction of the associated substation, which includes two 110-kV rooms and two transformers. Westnetz GmbH will subsequently operate the high-voltage grid and substation.
Thanks to the connection to the high-voltage grid, the airport is now connected to two different upstream substations, significantly increasing supply security. This is important given the increasing energy demand due to digitalization, electromobility, and modern airport technology. The local freight logistics companies also benefit from the improved and more stable energy supply. A specially constructed substation transforms the high-voltage power into medium-voltage and distributes it within the airport grounds.
