Zurich Airport recorded a significant increase in passenger numbers in April 2026, continuing its growth trajectory in the current fiscal year. A total of 2.948.839 passengers used Switzerland's largest air traffic hub, representing a 6,1% increase compared to the same month last year.
Of these, over 2,1 million were local flights, while transfer passengers accounted for approximately 26,9%, or 793.006 people. Industry experts attribute this development primarily to the high volume of passengers during the Easter holidays and a generally strong demand for business and city breaks in continental Europe. Despite geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, demand for international flights from Zurich remains robust.
Parallel to passenger growth, operational activity on the tarmac also increased. The number of aircraft movements rose by 5,0% to a total of 23.488 takeoffs and landings. Particularly noteworthy is the improved efficiency in flight operations: The average number of passengers per aircraft climbed to 139,3, representing an increase of 1,1%. Furthermore, seat occupancy improved by 1,7 percentage points to 82,3%. These figures demonstrate that airlines are increasingly utilizing their capacity at Zurich Airport more economically and are favoring larger aircraft types on high-traffic routes to accommodate the increased demand.
In contrast to passenger traffic, the cargo sector experienced a slight decline in the reporting month. Zurich Airport handled 36.694 tons of cargo in April, a decrease of 2,1% compared to the same period last year. Market analysts attribute this to a slight slowdown in global trade and changes in supply chain strategies within industry. While belly cargo on passenger aircraft remained stable, there were declines in dedicated cargo air traffic. Nevertheless, Zurich remains a key logistics hub for high-value goods, particularly for the Swiss pharmaceutical and watchmaking industries, which rely on fast and reliable air connections for exports.
Additional data from Swiss aviation statistics show that Zurich Airport further consolidated its market leadership over regional competitors such as Geneva and Basel in the first third of 2026. Investments in terminal infrastructure and the optimization of handling processes are contributing to increased attractiveness for international network carriers. For the upcoming summer season, those responsible anticipate a further expansion of capacity, as several airlines have added new destinations in North America and Asia to their flight schedules. The stable passenger numbers in April are therefore considered an indicator of a successful summer season at the airport in Kloten.
