The Czech Ministry of Defence has significantly strengthened its air force by purchasing two modern Embraer C-390 Millennium multi-purpose transport aircraft.
These aircraft are intended to raise the operational capability of the Czech armed forces to a new level and enable a wide range of missions - from troop transport and medical evacuation to humanitarian aid and aerial refueling. At the signing of the contract, Defence Minister Jana Černochová emphasised that the current crisis situations around the world underline the need for modern military mobility, as the recent evacuations from Afghanistan and Sudan have clearly shown.
The purchase of the two Embraer C-390s is part of a long-term strategy by the Czech Republic to modernize its military equipment and meet the requirements of NATO standards. The aircraft will modernize the Air Force's aging fleet and could play a key role in supporting NATO operations and humanitarian missions in the future. Bosco Da Costa Junior, President and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security, described the order as a sign of great trust and emphasized the high appreciation for the technology and reliability that the C-390 offers its users. The aircraft are known for their operational capability and reliability - the C-390 aircraft already in use worldwide have completed over 15.000 flight hours with an impressive operational capability rate of 93 percent.
The C-390 Millennium: Technology for the most demanding missions
With a maximum payload of 26 tons and a top speed of 870 km/h (470 knots), the C-390 is capable of carrying out not only tactical troop and material transport, but also specialized missions such as aerial refueling and medical evacuation. Thanks to its powerful engines and robust undercarriage, the C-390 can also operate from unpaved runways, which further expands its operational options in crisis and disaster areas. A rear hatch enables the loading of large goods and vehicles, which is particularly advantageous for military transport. The integration of a modern avionics system allows precise navigation and control, which makes the C-390 efficient even in difficult climatic and topographical areas.
The purchase agreement includes not only the aircraft, but also a comprehensive training and support package that will ensure that the Czech armed forces can work quickly and efficiently with the new aircraft. Embraer will provide special training programs for Czech personnel to ensure the smooth operation of the aircraft.
Impact on the Czech aerospace industry
Another interesting component of the contract is the high level of local production, which will be achieved through cooperation with the Czech aerospace industry. Embraer plans to develop and produce specific components for the C-390 in cooperation with Czech companies, which could open up new opportunities for the industry and the development of high-tech capabilities in the region. In the long term, this initiative could lead to a deeper partnership between the Brazilian manufacturer and the Czech industry, which will not only offer economic benefits to the Czech Republic, but also contribute to strengthening the country's strategic independence.
Overall, this new alliance between the Czech government and Embraer could also send a signal to other European countries to strengthen their fleets with modern, multi-purpose transport aircraft. The Czech Republic's decision follows a growing trend in Europe to improve military mobility and operational capabilities through specialized aircraft such as the C-390. In addition to the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Hungary, Portugal and other countries have also opted for the C-390, which highlights the increasing importance of such general-purpose aircraft within NATO.
Modernization as a security policy priority
The purchase of the C-390 underlines the Czech Republic's security policy ambitions. The decision is part of a broader strategy by NATO and its partners to continuously strengthen their military capacities and adapt them to changing threat scenarios. With this purchase, the Czech Republic is demonstrating that it not only wants to ensure its own national security, but also wants to live up to its obligations as a NATO member. In an era of uncertainty marked by geopolitical tensions and increasingly frequent natural disasters, the ability to respond to crises flexibly and efficiently is becoming increasingly important.
With the new C-390 aircraft, the Czech Air Force will soon be able to transport troops and heavy equipment flexibly and quickly, not only nationally but also internationally. The decision to invest in state-of-the-art, multifunctional transport aircraft shows that the Czech government is ready to meet the demands of the future and secure its military capabilities for the coming decades.
