Despite stable demand, Austria's hotel industry remains under pressure

The overnight stay figures recently published by Statistics Austria illustrate the mixed trends in Austria's tourism industry. In September, around 11,3 million overnight stays were recorded nationwide - a decrease of 7,4% compared to the same month last year.

One explanation for the decline can be found in the unusually high rainfall and storms that affected many regions and placed a heavy burden on businesses. These natural events not only led to infrastructural challenges, but also to a significant decline in tourists. According to Hans Spreitzhofer, chairman of the Hotel Industry Association of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (WKÖ), this was not without consequences for bookings and the economic results of businesses.

Despite decline, positive sign for autumn and winter

Nevertheless, the industry is optimistic about the upcoming autumn holidays and the winter season. Spreitzhofer expressed optimism in view of the current booking status, which is supported by stable demand and optimism about the weather. The autumn holidays have become significantly more important in recent years and will also be booked more frequently by families and individual travelers in 2024.

The trend towards spontaneous short trips plays into the hands of many companies, as favorable weather conditions often lead to short-term bookings. In addition, the industry is experiencing high demand for authentic nature and health experiences. Activities such as ice bathing, forest bathing and winter hiking are experiencing a boom and are considered attractions that contribute both to tourist appeal and to health recovery.

Burdensome cost development remains a challenge

Despite the positive development in demand, the economic conditions for the hotel industry remain tense. The increased energy costs, increased interest rates and higher wages are putting the industry under pressure, which is reflected in declining operating results. According to a survey by the WKÖ, around 30% of companies recorded a decline in sales and profits in 2023, which, according to Spreitzhofer, could be improved through rapid political support and targeted framework conditions.

While the number of overnight stays is promising, the net operating result for many businesses is still inadequate. An analysis by the Austrian Hotel and Tourism Bank confirms the trend that the revenues of many hotels are no longer keeping up with the increased costs. Spreitzhofer is therefore calling on the future federal government to create clear economic framework conditions for the hotel industry in order to ensure year-round tourism development and to establish Austria as a diverse travel destination.

Forward-looking adjustments for crisis-proof tourism

Looking to the future, the industry is ready for innovation. The development towards year-round offers and the focus on nature experiences and individual services should strengthen sustainable tourism in the long term. According to the WKÖ, these trends are reflected in the growing demand for nature and wellness experiences, which should be promoted by expanding modern offers and the flexible adaptation of businesses to changing guest requirements. This includes not only nature-based activities, but also specific nutrition and fitness programs that are geared to the growing demands of guests.

Despite the challenges the industry is facing due to rising costs and changing travel behavior, there is still hope that positive development is possible with appropriate political decisions and a sustained spirit of innovation. A holistic approach that relieves the burden on the hotel industry in the long term and at the same time promotes the development of a diverse and crisis-proof tourism location could strengthen Austria's position as a popular travel destination.
