Development and outlook for flight connections to the Usedom holiday region for the year 2026

Heringsdorf Airport is preparing for an intensified flight season, which officially begins on May 2, 2026, and will significantly shape the tourist offerings of the island of Usedom. Following a successful 2025 fiscal year, in which passenger numbers increased by almost seven percent to a total of 23.156 passengers, the airport authority is focusing on continuity and the expansion of established connections.

The route network for the coming year comprises five strategically important destinations both domestically and internationally, with flights consistently concentrated on Saturdays to optimally support the changeover of guests in the regional hotel industry. With an average occupancy rate of around 80 percent last year, the regional airport has proven to be a stable factor in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's infrastructure, recording a total of approximately 4500 flight movements, which underscores the location's relevance for upscale tourism.

Economic balance sheet and strategic positioning of the regional airport

The positive development in passenger numbers last year is seen by airport management as confirmation of its current strategy. Dirk Zabel, Managing Director of Heringsdorf Airport, emphasized that the increase from 21.689 to over 23.000 passengers was no coincidence, but rather the result of a targeted selection of attractive source markets. Regional airports often face the challenge of operating scheduled services profitably in a seasonally driven environment. Heringsdorf achieves this through close collaboration with tour operators and established airlines. The international connection to Luxembourg, in particular, proved to be the driving force behind operations last year, achieving a load factor of 84 percent.

These figures illustrate that the air travel segment to the island of Usedom primarily appeals to guests who value a fast and comfortable journey. The strategic focus aims to solidify the island's position as a premium destination for holidaymakers from southern Germany, the Alpine countries, and the Benelux nations. Furthermore, the 6,8 percent growth rate in scheduled flights demonstrates the increasing acceptance of air travel compared to the often time-consuming journeys by train or car, which particularly helps to relieve pressure on the local road infrastructure during the summer months.

Domestic connections and the role of charter partners

The season kicks off on May 2, 2026, with flights to Kassel and Friedrichshafen. These routes will operate until October 17, covering the entire period from the pre- to the post-season. The flights are operated by the charter company MHS Aviation, acting on behalf of the tour operator UKS Touristik. This collaboration is a classic example of the business model of smaller airports, where specialized tour operators charter entire blocks of seats to offer package holidaymakers all-inclusive deals including flights and hotel accommodation.

The connection to Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance opens up a region with high purchasing power in the border triangle of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, while the connection to Kassel covers central Germany. Since all flights operate on Saturdays, they perfectly align with the usual booking cycles of vacation rentals and hotels on Usedom. For the region, this means a predictable influx of tourists who, on average, have higher purchasing power and stay longer than day visitors.

International routes and connections to global hubs

A key factor in the island's international profile is its collaboration with major network airlines. Lufthansa CityLine will again operate flights between Heringsdorf and the global hub of Frankfurt am Main in 2026. This connection is scheduled from May 30th to September 19th. Via Frankfurt, Usedom is theoretically accessible worldwide, as overseas passengers can connect to the flight to Heringsdorf with just one transfer. This strengthens Usedom's competitiveness compared to other Baltic Sea destinations that lack a similar hub connection.

The Swiss airline Swiss is also expanding the service. From June 27 to August 22, there will be direct flights to Zurich. This focus on the peak summer weeks reflects the airline's target audience for the Swiss holiday season. The connection to Luxembourg operated by Luxair, scheduled from May 23 to September 26, completes the international portfolio. Last year's record-breaking load factors on this route suggest that Luxembourg will remain a key component of Heringsdorf's flight schedule in 2026.

Operational challenges and ground infrastructure

With approximately 4500 aircraft movements in 2025, Heringsdorf Airport handles a considerable volume for its size. This includes scheduled and charter flights as well as general aviation, such as private jets and light aircraft. The logistical challenge lies primarily in concentrating scheduled traffic on Saturdays. On this day, staff and equipment must perform at their peak to ensure the smooth handling of several consecutive aircraft.

Investments in passenger safety and comfort in the terminal building, as well as runway maintenance, are ongoing processes that ensure the airport's continued operation. Since Heringsdorf Airport also plays a vital role in disaster relief and air ambulance services, maintaining operations beyond mere tourism is crucial. Stable passenger numbers form the economic backbone for maintaining this infrastructure and being prepared for future developments in regional air traffic.

Outlook on the region's tourism value creation

The airport's significance extends far beyond the runway. Usedom's tourism industry benefits massively from air passengers, as they statistically invest above average in local services, restaurants, and wellness offerings. Cooperation between the airport, tourism associations, and hotel operators is therefore essential for the success of the upcoming season. It is assumed that air access is a decisive factor for guests choosing a holiday destination, especially those who are reluctant to travel by road for more than six hours.

A continuation of the positive trend is expected for 2026. Should occupancy rates remain stable at 80 percent or even exceed this mark, further capacity expansion or an extension of the season could be considered for subsequent years. Currently, however, the focus is on ensuring high service quality for the five firmly planned destinations in order to secure the long-term attractiveness of Heringsdorf as a location for both airlines and passengers.
