German leisure airline Discover Airlines is expanding its route network in Northern Europe and launching two new direct connections from its hub in Frankfurt am Main to Eastern Finland.
As announced by the Lufthansa Group subsidiary, the city of Savonlinna will be served once a week on Saturdays starting June 19, 2027, as part of a seasonal summer flight schedule. The region in the Finnish Lakeland is a popular destination for nature and cultural tourism, especially during the summer months.
In addition, the airline is introducing a seasonal winter service to Kajaani. Starting December 17, 2027, the northeastern Finnish city will be served once a week – every Friday. Kajaani serves as a gateway to the winter sports and recreational areas of the Kainuu region. The airline will use Airbus A320 family aircraft for both routes. The connection via the Frankfurt hub also allows passengers to utilize the group's transfer network.
With these new routes, Discover Airlines is entering niche segments in the Scandinavian market that were previously served primarily via domestic connections from Helsinki. Direct flights from Central Europe to smaller Finnish regional airports have often been considered economically challenging for European airlines in the past, as demand fluctuates strongly seasonally and is heavily reliant on individual tourist bookings. Therefore, operating capacity on these routes requires a high minimum load factor during the short seasonal windows.
The decision aligns with Discover Airlines' strategy of gradually expanding its offerings of decentralized holiday and niche destinations. However, industry experts point out that the long-term success of such routes depends on stable booking figures and the fee structures at the smaller destination airports. How the load factor develops on the routes to Savonlinna and Kajaani will become clear over the course of the respective flight schedule periods.
