Dortmund Airport anticipates the start of the major summer travel wave with the start of the school holidays in North Rhine-Westphalia on Friday, July 11, 2025. Numerous travelers will be embarking on their vacations immediately after the last day of school. During the six-week NRW school holidays, passengers from Dortmund will have 35 different vacation destinations to choose from. The airport expects a total traffic volume of around 26 passengers until the end of the holidays on August 470.000.
Sunny, warm-water destinations such as Antalya in Turkey, Catania in Sicily, or Split in Croatia are particularly popular during the summer months. But lesser-known destinations are also gaining popularity. Tirana, the capital of Albania, is increasingly attracting tourists seeking culture, big-city flair, and excursions to the nearby Adriatic coast. Montenegro attracts visitors with its expansive river landscapes and the so-called Montenegrin "Niagara Falls" near Podgorica. The country is also considered a paradise for water sports enthusiasts, with activities such as kayaking, kitesurfing, and jet skiing. Flights to Tirana depart several times a day from Dortmund, and Podgorica is served three times a week.
Dortmund Airport also offers attractive destinations for city travelers. Destinations such as Gdansk in Poland and Thessaloniki in Greece delight with their sea air and architectural diversity. Warsaw in Poland and Istanbul in Turkey boast rich histories, vibrant cultural scenes, and unique atmospheres. Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport also serves as an important hub for connecting flights to numerous long-haul destinations. There are five weekly flights to Warsaw from Dortmund, and Istanbul is on the schedule daily.
Particular attention is being paid to capacity for flights to the south. The Mallorca offering has been further expanded compared to the previous year and now includes up to 22 weekly connections. Eurowings and Condor serve the popular Balearic island several times a day. The Turkish Riviera around Antalya is also experiencing growth: SunExpress and Pegasus Airlines offer passengers excellent connections to the Turkish Mediterranean coast with up to 15 weekly departures. As is customary during holiday periods, Dortmund Airport recommends all passengers arrive at the airport early and advises checking in online if possible and limiting hand luggage to the bare essentials. Due to the ongoing expansion of the B1 to the A40, travelers should allow sufficient time for their journey.
