Dortmund Airport is pleased to announce the resumption of a formerly popular flight route: From January 5, 2026, travelers will once again be able to fly directly to the southeastern Serbian city of Niš twice a week. The connection was already operated from 2016 to January 2024, but was temporarily removed from the flight schedule. Now, the route will be operated by the airline Wizz Air and will be offered on Mondays and Fridays. This decision revives an important route for travelers from the region who have family or business ties to Serbia.
The city of Niš, with approximately 250.000 inhabitants, is an important center in southeastern Serbia. Niš Constantine the Great Airport is the country's second-largest airport and is located approximately 250 kilometers southeast of the Serbian capital Belgrade and approximately 160 kilometers west of the Bulgarian capital Sofia. The airport's strategic location makes it an important gateway for travelers to this Balkan region.
Niš itself is one of the oldest cities in the Balkans and boasts a very rich history, significantly shaped by Roman and Ottoman influences. Known as Naissus, it was an important Roman city and is known as the birthplace of the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great. Later, the city was under Ottoman rule for almost 500 years, a fact reflected in its architecture and culture to this day, such as the well-preserved Niš Fortress. The Nišava River flows through the city and it is surrounded by mountains, dense forests, and impressive waterfalls, making it attractive for nature lovers.
Wizz Air's resumption of flights to Niš fits in with the growth strategies of both partners. Dortmund Airport achieved a passenger record in 2024 and has proven resilient in recent years despite various challenges, such as temporary airline restrictions. The renewed connection to Niš strengthens Dortmund Airport's route network, particularly in the segment of connections to Eastern Europe and the Balkans, which are traditionally of great importance to Wizz Air.
