Dortmund Airport: Girls visit the airport fire department

As part of the annual Girls' Day, the airport fire department at Dortmund Airport invited eighteen interested girls to a trial day. The aim of this initiative is to promote diversity in the professional world and break gender stereotypes by introducing students to careers that have previously been predominantly represented by the opposite sex.

During the day of action, the fire department led the students in grades six to nine through the airport, informed them about fire protection measures in the terminal and enabled them to view the apron and the runway up close. The tour ended at the airport's own fire station, where the participants were able to view the impressive emergency vehicles in the Panther category. At the end there was a fire extinguishing exercise in which the group was allowed to become active and practiced the correct use of fire extinguishers.

With Girls' Day, companies particularly want to draw attention to professions in which the gender ratio is unbalanced and the proportion of women is less than 40 percent. Airport managing director Ludger van Bebber supports this form of career orientation and emphasizes that rigid role models are long outdated. It is therefore very welcome that young schoolgirls visit the airport every year and consider careers that have so far been predominantly dominated by men. Girls'Day helps to promote more diversity and encourage young women.
